Muva Dame - Tell Me

Overall Impression:
Artfully channeling the ambivalence of a broken relationship, Muva Dame's Tell Me captures the struggles of interpersonal drama with skill and grace.  Torn between letting go and taking advantage of what's available, Tell Me outlines the way we fall back into arms that we know can't hold us, and the talents of Muva Dame deliver the message with passionate and breathtaking vocals and a smooth track that'll have you coming back for more.

Strongest Point(s):
Tell Me has a flawless mix - the vocals are bright and sparkling, and every bit of the instrumental supports the voice perfectly.  The beat hits hard, and keeps the energy moving smoothly.  These harmonies are stellar, and the hooks are plentiful and powerful.  Somehow relaxing and hype at the same time, this track is solid gold.  Well done!

SONG REVIEW 🎵📝 Saint Mars - Help

radioairplay.com independent new music

Saint Mars - Help
Alternative/Alt. Rock, Pop
United Kingdom

Overall Impression: Help is a powerful breakthrough song, performed masterfully by Saint Mars. The lyrics paint a picture of a harmful situation that pushes the subject to his breaking point, then realizes they are strong enough to escape and thrive. The lyrics are supported by a very talented voice, who uses his range to his benefit, and terrific instrumentals, all mixed and balanced beautifully. The feel of the song is passionate, and the flow always moves forward, supported by a groovy syncopated rhythm that pushes all the way to the end. Overall killer job by Saint Mars.

Strongest Point(s): The professionalism and musicality is astoundingly displayed in Help. The blend and balance was pleasing, hitting all the check marks the whole song. From the beginning, I was bobbing my head, and I was singing along by the second chorus. The beat is relentless, keeping the feel optimistic and fighting through the end, and is one that provokes the listener to dance and sing along. Saint Mars has that collaborative and unique sound that bands should strive for, and I can't wait to add this track to my playlist.

Target Audience Appeal: Younger audiences and fans of pop punk are going to enjoy this tune, along with alt. rock and today's hits. Fans of anywhere from Weezer to My Chemical Romance can find something to love in this song. This song would be a hit on stage, along with on screen, in ads, and on the radio.

Artist target suggestions: You have your own unique voice, so aim to be Saint Mars. SONG REVIEW 🎵📝 SoulBeast - Betrayed

radioairplay.com independent new music

SoulBeast - Betrayed

Metal, Classic Metal, Hard Rock
OH, United States

Overall Impression:
SoulBeast comes out swinging with their intensely driven and definitively metallic song Betrayed.  With a fast and crunchy sound well informed by the great metal acts of yesteryear, the band delivers a satisfyingly heavy reflection on the sensation of misplaced faith - and does so with skill and passion. Betrayed's lyrics run the gamut of self-consuming emotional turmoil that comes with treachery, and even goes so far as to address the solution to such self-consumption.  Forgive the betrayer for your own sake, but never let yourself forget what they've done.

Strongest Point(s):
SoulBeast has really cohesive sound!  Betrayed's mix is really solid and fully highlights the individual pieces of the band's overall sound - and I'm really digging every bit of it.  The lead vocals are really great for this style, and I love the skill of the guitar solo at 3:09 - intensely exciting performance, and exactly what the song calls for.  Also, great lyrics!  It's not often you hear a song of this style and energy that dwells in the negative space as well as the constructive.  Awesome work!

Target Audience Appeal:
Fans of classic metal will love this sound, and anyone craving something with a familiar tone but a new edge will find plenty to unpack with SoulBeast.  Betrayed is an anthem of awareness - engaging in the darkness that accompanies infidelity while still encouraging listeners to seek self-assurance; a unique message with a really solid delivery.  I look forward to hearing more!

Artist target suggestions:
Skid Row, Warrant, Poison, Judas Priest, Quiet Riot, Def Leppard, Ted Nugent, Sammy Hagar, Tesla, Damn Yankees, Bullett Boys

SONG REVIEW 🎵📝 Drobinko - Heart Me

radioairplay.com independent new music

Drobinko - Heart Me

Rock, Indie
NY, United States

Overall Impression: Drobinko is combining 2000's pop-punk with a modern Electro-feel. This combination is one of brilliance in Heart Me, with a fresh unique sound, and an all around great song. Drobinko had me dancing the whole song, and I was singing along by the second chorus. Along with that the mix is well balanced, along with the combination of electric and acoustic sounds and instruments, and the added stereo effects are a wonderful sprinkle on top. The form of the song is easy to follow, and the it has a feeling of being projected forward the whole time, providing a sense of moving on.

Strongest Point(s): The cohesiveness of Drobinko is remarkable. All of the musicians are masters of their instrument and voice, and their musicianship and ability to play together is phenomenal. The mix is so strong and well done, it hits all the marks as a listener, engaging the entire time, and begging to be sung along with. It is apparent that this group has been playing together for years, and if not it is all the more impressive.

Target Audience Appeal: This does have a strong Weezer, Fountains of Wayne vibe to it, and I feel that listeners of that genre will engage most with you, likely between high school age and late 30's. This would run well on a festival circuit, along with on screen (streaming services, Indie movies, and the like). This is a great windows down driving song to sing along with at the top of your lungs in the car. I can really see this song becoming a hit.

Artist target suggestions: Blink 182, Coldplay, Daughtry, Fall Out Boy, Foster The People, Fountains of Wayne, Fun., Green Day, Linkin Park, Neon Trees, Oasis, Paramore, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The All-American Rejects, The Cars, The Cranberries, The Fray, The Killers, The Strokes, Train, U2, Weezer

Song Review for Solid Heart: https://radioairplayblog.blogspot.com/2020/04/song-review-up-urban-project-solid-heart.html

The project consisted of a group of musicians that were scattered all over Europe. Unfortunately, the continuity of making music together suffered under this situation.
This led to outstanding musicians from the around Aachen/Cologne Germany coming together and founding the current lineup of Urban Project with the spirit of connecting people. Urban Project is consistently working on new music and they are planning to release a new EP in the near future. They are pursuing to express themselves in the most creative way and want to make their music attractive for a widely diversified audience.

Line-up:
Urban Elsässer (guitar)
Yen Anetzberger (vocals)
Markus Proske (bass)
Ben Overmann (drums)

Solid Heart Video:

How are you impacted as a musician during this time?
The most important thing for us is to express ourselves through music and motivate others to be lively, vivid and open minded.  Believing that our own music, created with intuition and intention, finds an audience in this difficult times to experience the profoundness of the music.

To be honest; everything changes so fast; We wish musicians appreciate the time spent making music, that they maintain openness, love, curiosity, no matter what happens.

Can you describe your sound in one ramble-on sentence?
Urban Project is Contemporary Sound, Relevant, Beautiful, Fragile and Contradictory.

What's your earliest music-related memory growing up?
I grew up in a small catholic village in Germany, when at the age of 6 I met an apparition: it was an older boy carrying an old radio with thick batteries on his back and it was playing Jimi Hendrix, Electric Lady Land, since that time I was electrified by his sound, moving between heaven and earth, between lightness and heaviness.

Do you write/compose your own songs? Briefly describe your songwriting process.
There is no one way, imitation, inspiration, or intuition. I learned how important the laws of the overtone series, the kinetics, the physical sensation is for songwriting, how important breathing is in all musical processes; also the insight that every small idea has a context where it becomes strong, or that even weak ideas are often prepared for big ones and should therefore be valued.

Does anything in particular inspire you to write? What get's your creative juices flowing?
Always separate the process of generating ideas and their evaluation, for me this is the most important condition for the creative flow, get to know your mindset, cultivate inner calmness, it is the entrance to unconscious intelligence.

What do you like more: Performing live or recording in the studio?
The most beautiful is the moment where the surprise works, where beauty is created in the process, I love the sense of time when playing live, it is a small miracle.

Any embarrassing on stage moments you'd like to share? C’mon, don’t be shy!
Once in a small club I was fully electrified, my fingers got stuck and luckily the strings broke, after that I didn't know the next song anymore :)

What has been a highlight for you in the past year? (Either personally or for your music career.)
To find a band where different characters come together, sometimes it's not easy, but I have learned to appreciate the value of difference.

If you were to cover another band/artist's song/record, which would you pick and why?
Angel of Hendrix, it is the differentiated loving way to touch the sky with simple harmonies.

What are some artists/bands that you're into at the moment? Or any particular song you find yourself listening to over and over?
Sophie Hunger, Nick Cave, Coltrane, and all the interesting new stuff.

What do you enjoy doing outside of music? Does your hobby rejuvenate your creativity?
No real hobbies, I am interested in questions of psychology, philosophy and the everyday phenomenon of wondering.

What's one thing people should know about you? We are a creative chaos.

If you had one message to give to your fans, what would it be?
Believe in yourself, trust and seek your creative source!

I write all my own songs writing is one of the best things in my life and one of my greatest accomplishments.

Does anything in particular inspire you to write? What get's your creative juices flowing?

What do you like more: Performing live or recording in the studio?
I like both equally there is no better feeling than doing what you love playing live or in the Studio sets me free completely.

Any embarrassing on stage moments you'd like to share? C’mon, don’t be shy!
I was playing for an artist friend of mine and was playing a cover song for her I missed almost every note in the song but was so loud you couldn't hear mistakes which was lucky on my part and didn't end up to bad.

What has been a highlight for you in the past year? (Either personally or for your music career.)
I got radio play for the first time this year and that is a huge accomplishment and dream that came true.

I would cover tunes from the band Fuel as I think they have some of the best alternative songs ever wrote and I have alot of respect for them all.

What are some artists/bands that you're into at the moment? Or any particular song you find yourself listening to over and over?
I've been listening to a band called Highly Suspect I find there music very meaningful and addicting.

What's one thing people should know about you?
I am and will always be the best I can be for my fans my family and friends.

If you had one message to give to your fans, what would it be?

SONG REVIEW 🎵📝 Bobby Newman - Almost Mine

radioairplay.com independent new music

Bobby Newman - Almost Mine

Blues, Rock
TN, United States

Overall Impression:
The intimate fiddle claims the opening, cementing the song's subtle emotional pull - very memorable. The acoustic guitar performance provides the backbone to the track with Bobby Newman's powerful yet soothing voice giving the tune another dimension. The choice of tempo also lends to that..... you know, that slow-burning Country/Americana kind.  The arrangement was well thought out as it was a warm audible change when the female vocal entered the song.  The mix between the two vocals lends itself to the heart and soul of the lyrics - two longing harmonies embodying bare emotion.  Musicianship seems to meld traditional, bluesy americana melodies with country elements for quite a beautiful song.

Strongest Point(s):
Instrumentation, melody and lyric.  Nothing felt rushed, the listener was able to fully feel the weight of every note, emotion, and word.

Another strength is vocal timbre for sure. As an artist/group getting an audience to know your material and recognize your sound quickly is a great trait.  I feel like if I heard another track from Bobby Newman, just by the sound of his voice I would be able to tell it was him without knowing the artist on the track prior.

Area(s) of Improvement:
The vocals shouldn't be perfectly in unison as they are two separate entities, same lyrics but individual deliveries. This could be an artistic choice with how they both play their roles. My opinion completely here, but in the delivery at 2:57 when the female vocals come in on the word "Your" prior to Bobby's, it throws me off, only slightly, but just enough that I'm taken out of the moment.  May want to keep the same note and intensity from female vocal, but come in on time with Bobby.

2:05, can't tell if it's a loud audible slide on a guitar string or if the audio file is damaged here but there is something audible in the mix that shouldn't be there.

2:13 something funky goes on here. Sounds like a bad edit in the drum mix, bad clip or edit perhaps? It's really evident within the drum fill listening in a headphone mix.

Other than the above mentioned, I think that this is a solid track. Great job with this tune!

Target Audience Appeal:
I feel that this song is right inline with underground to mainstream modern day country/acoustic/americana movement that many artists have broken through to success. There is also this acoustic/rock quality to it which is why I will list Shinedown as one of your target artist suggestion. Very inline with their acoustic performances. Listeners young and old would very much appreciate both the sound and the message of Almost Mine.

Artist target suggestions:
Bob Seger, Zac Brown, Darius Rucker, John Prine, Steve Earle, Lukas Nelson and the Promise of the Real, The Head and the Heart, Tom. T Hall, Josh Ritter, The Felice Brothers, Guy Clark, Brandi Carlile, Shinedown (Acoustic stuff), Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit

SONG REVIEW 🎵📝 UP (Urban Project) - Solid Heart

radioairplay.com independent new music

UP (Urban Project) - Solid Heart
Pop, Alt/Indie
Germany

Overall Impression:
This is such a complex and masterfully crafted piece of music!  Urbanproject's Solid Heart is a white-knuckled journey through uncharted territory, utterly unique and filled with surprises.  The instrumentals are cleverly assembled, and the colors and tones you strike throughout the song are vibrant, dense, and brimming with intent. Solid Heart is evidence that solid musicianship and heart-felt songwriting can produce new and engrossing works of art!

Strongest Point(s):
Really great harmonic development - super strong bass part/tone! Loving the vocals as well.  Massive fan of the shift at 2:47.  What an incredible payoff, perfectly capitalizing on the tension and build up to that point with a super satisfying release.  There's so much genuinely exciting musicality here from the winding synth motifs to the unconventional harmonies and seemingly aleatoric fills - absolutely killer instincts all around!

Area(s) of Improvement:
This mix is very powerful, I love the depth and strength in the sound - but it feels like certain parts, like the entrance at 0:07, could benefit from a little more blending into the overall soundscape.  You might want to consider borrowing the progression from 2:47-3:00 as an intro.  Using the string pads as a sort of overture before dropping that hammering bass and synth/guitar part might incentivize new listeners to stick around until the payoff.

Target Audience Appeal:
There's so much here for so many demographics.  Solid Heart is a universe unto itself, and Urbanproject is extending a shuttle pass to anyone brave enough to take the journey.  I think fans of progressive rock/metal will love the energy and activity in this tune.  The vocals and bridge section promise to be appealing to the more pop-oriented crowd.  I know that I'll be watching out for any and all future releases from you!  Excellent work.

Artist target suggestions:
Animal Collective, Tame Impala, Adult Jazz, Battles, Baths, The Microphones, Sheep Dog & Wolf, Dan Deacon, Panda Bear, Black Moth Super Rainbow

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT ⭐️ Sue Munns - Please Mr Rix

radioairplay.com independent new music

Sue Munns - Please Mr Rix
Country, Folk, Easy listening
Australia

Singer/songwriter from  “The Edge” @Beacon in the West Australian Wheatbelt.  Isolation and an amazing diversity in the natural environment  nurture this songwriter, with good seasonal rains seeing her spending countless hours amongst the wildflowers, where many songs are born. Sue draws on the talent of daughter Amber  singing in her gorgeous  “Stevie Nicks” tones The most humbling experience has been the simple “thankyou” from a stranger who found solace and strength in her song.

Tell us more about "Please Mr Rix" - It is a song about getting out of our comfort zone and the fear and discomfort this can create.  Based on the culmination of the end of school days and the immediate freedoms this allows,  how easy it is to make poor decisions. Hungrily awaiting “adulthood”, when it arrives it can be daunting. “Mr Rix” is everything that is familiar and safe. The naming of Mr Rix is simply a tribute to an incredible School Principle, (in name only!)

Mr Rix was recorded in Perth with Andy Court, who we have worked with before. Andy  has been recording for over 25 years and  knows how to squeeze out the last drop of juice! A master in harmony it is always a pleasure.

"Please Mr Rix" is an elegant yet sophisticated folk song that will make you stop whatever you are doing and unwind admiring delicate vocals, intertwining harmonies, and Sue Munns' strong storytelling abilities. - RadioAirplay.com

How are you impacted as a musician during this time?
I live on the very edge of Western Australia’s Wheatbelt on a farm of around 40,000 acres so isolation is nothing new. We embrace every opportunity and have some gigs in the pipeline providing in the months ahead the lifting of social distancing.

I am unable to do planned recording now so am focusing on songwriting and have a number of songs  almost ready.

I will be working on a sponsored tourism music video featuring one of my songs written about a local rock, “Billiburning”, a favourite picnic destination for generations and wildflower hotspot.

Can you describe your sound in one ramble-on sentence?
An emotional journey whispering secrets , pulsing  of heartache, unfolding stories and reaching deep inside to soothe.

What's your earliest music-related memory growing up?
My earliest musical memory is of my father filling our “lounge room” with his band gear leaving no room for chairs and  then going to sleep listening to them create “Creedence”. Also being first to the town hall to set up and asked to spread the Wheeties across the floor for the dancers.

Do you write/compose your own songs? Briefly describe your songwriting process.
I often start a song amongst the wildflowers walking and sometimes even have to get up in the night to record an idea. I always record my progress so I don’t forget melody. Some take me ages to finish and others are really quick. I stick with what I know or tell stories about others or events.

Does anything in particular inspire you to write? What get's your creative juices flowing?
My inspiration often comes from time amongst the wildflowers. I can be seen walking about our property singing  to the birds and Roos (anyone who will listen)  working on lyrics and melody. I have also drawn on  life experience  .
I love to tell stories of past events and people and have  been encouraged by the reaction of strangers  at songwriter events.

What do you like more: Performing live or recording in the studio?
I  enjoy  the live performance  ,particularly  doing originals, but do love going into the studio to really  build  my songs as I don’t have a band.

Any embarrassing on stage moments you'd like to share? C’mon, don’t be shy!
Yes total brain fade near the end of a performance of an original song that was going awesomely well in front of a huge audience, and I got distracted!!  Couldn’t even think of my own name!

What has been a highlight for you in the past year? (Either personally or for your music career.)
Highlight in the past year has been selection on West Australian Music compilation CD.

If you were to cover another band/artist's song/record, which would you pick and why?
Probably Linda Ronstadt’s Desperado, I love the emotion.

What are some artists/bands that you're into at the moment? Or any particular song you find yourself listening to over and over?
Kasey Chambers/Shane Nicholson, Kimmie Rhodes, Andy Michaels,(Angel) Carla Geneva.

What do you enjoy doing outside of music? Does your hobby rejuvenate your creativity?
I am from  a long line of gardeners and have  had this undeniable  need to get amongst the dirt.

What's one thing people should know about you?
I am old enough to write from experience.

If you had one message to give to your fans, what would it be?
You are never alone.
