SONG REVIEW πŸŽ΅πŸ“ Stoned Evergreen Travelers - Angelville

radioairplay.com independent new music

Stoned Evergreen Travelers - Angelville
Rock, Metal, Hellbilly
Washington, United States

Overall Impression: Washington rockers Stoned Evergreen Travelers have released their new tune Angelville. Lacing backwoods Country with high-octane Metal, Stoned Evergreen Travelers have conjured up a new sound that is wild, alluring, and slightly deadly. Angelville opens with a devilish atmosphere. Led by the fiddle, it instantly sinks its claws into the listener and does with them what it pleases. As the guitar groove kicks in, the tune takes on the shape of a wild animal and thrashes from side to side. Lyrically, Angelville tells the story of Jesse and his fiery fight with the devil. It's a tale that should come with a warning label. The lyrics are sung with a jagged, Rock edge and given just the right amount of melodic catchiness. As the tune progresses, a killer breakdown paints a fight scene and sends the fiddle tearing through the stratosphere. Overall, Angelville by Stoned Evergreen Travelers is a hellishly good Hard Rock listen that burns fast and hot.

Strongest Point(s): The instrumental work and music in Angelville is wildly cool. The fiddle and heavy guitars work well together, and keep the interest high with killer melodies, riffs, and textures. There is so much attitude radiating off of Angelville that it is instantly set apart from other Hard Rock tunes. It should be noted that while it would be easy to make this blend of Country and Hard Rock cheesy and low-brow, Stoned Evergreen Travelers makes sure to create tunes that appeal to fans who are looking to really listen and appreciate artistic nuance.

Target Audience Appeal: Fans of Hard Rock, Alternative Rock, and Country Rock will dig Stoned Evergreen Travelers's new tune Angelville.

Artist target suggestions: Flogging Molly, Charlie Daniels Band, Dropkick Murphys, Primus, Les Claypool, Smokehowl, Metallica, Motorhead, Frank Zappa, Gogol Bordello, Father of Sam, System of a Down, Clutch

SONG REVIEW πŸŽ΅πŸ“ Severed Few - Ride Like a Hellion

radioairplay.com independent new music

Severed Few - Ride Like a Hellion
Metal, Rock
Washington, United States

Overall Impression: Full of meaty riffs, hard-hitting rhythms, and plenty of attitude, Severed Few serves up a hearty slab of groove-based metal that is sure to get the senses well and truly roused. "Ride Like a Hellion" is chock full of anthemic choruses, down'n'dirty riffage, and wailing wah-soaked lead guitar work, providing listeners with a straight-to-the-point piece of groove-infused songwriting that is both well arranged and gloriously bombastic in its approach.

Strongest Point(s): Any groove-drenched metaller such as "Ride Like a Hellion" needs the type of energy-fueled performance that ensures every gloriously dirty riff, rhythmic punch, and memorable hook really leaps out at the listener, and it goes without saying that Severed Few absolutely nail this. Whether it'd be the wildly expressive and animated vocal performance, effective groove-infused drum and bass combination, or each and every well-executed guitar riff, every performance feels well and truly alive, allowing the writing to really kick into its higher gears when the arrangement calls for it. The excellent raspy tonal qualities of the lead vocal performance certainly prove itself to be a worthy match against the intense down-tuned riffage, and with the tightly locked-in rhythmic backbone provided by the drums and bass and effective sprinklings of melody courtesy of the lead guitar work, "Ride Like a Hellion" feels like a well-rounded package, one that many a metaller can appreciate.

Target Audience Appeal: I can certainly see "Ride Like a Hellion" greatly appealing to groove metal lovers.

Artist target suggestions: Black Label Society, Hellyeah, Pantera, Godsmack, Rebel Meets Rebel, Corrosion Of Conformity, Prong, Metallica, MotΓΆrhead, Pride & Glory, Rex Brown, Down

SONG REVIEW πŸŽ΅πŸ“ Greenvale Manitou - Skies & Grain

radioairplay.com independent new music

Greenvale Manitou - Skies & Grain
Alternative/Alt. Rock, Hip Hop, Metal
Minnesota, United States

Overall Impression: Powered by its poignant themes and bombastically propelled forward by both its excellent writing and accomplished performances, Greenvale Manitou's explosive prog rock/metal track "Skies & Grain" is a melodically exciting and rhythmically thrilling piece of songwriting that is steeped in inspired creativity and thought-provoking sentiment, providing a rewarding listening experience that many a rock and metal lover will appreciate.

Strongest Point(s): Opening with some well-implemented and strikingly effective scene-setting sound design elements that include subtle radio static and unnerving air raid sirens, a strong sense of ambiance and atmosphere is swiftly established and helps to instantly draw listeners into the track's potent themes. It's not long after this rather haunting intro that we're introduced to one of "Skies & Grain's" many compelling guitar prog-tinted guitar riffs, this one making excellent use of a palm-muted arpeggio based progression that serves as the perfect backdrop to introduce the lead vocals into the arrangement. A particularly strong vocal performance stands confidently at the song's forefront and adopts a brilliant mix of alternative and more intense metal-inspired vocal styling that manages to effortlessly mold itself so as to better fit the various textural changes that occur throughout the arrangement, an example of this would be how the vocals embrace a timbrally delicate and more dreamlike persona in the verse sections which then gives way to a far more guttural and growl-infused metal-inspired style in the chorus sections. Between the moments of atmosphere-inducing calm and collectives and outright riff-tastic dazzle, there is a clear focus on melody, whether it'd be the beautifully crafted lead guitar work and its impeccable phrasing or the interesting melodic movement that has been intricately woven into the compelling vocal lines, "Skies & Grain" has plenty of memorable hooks that listeners will find it incredibly difficult not to be swept up by.

Target Audience Appeal: There's a great blend of genres on offer in "Skies & Grain" that allows it to appeal to a broad range of music lovers but can certainly see it greatly appealing to the more progressive rock style lovers particularly.

Artist target suggestions: Porcupine Tree, Haken, Subsignal, Devin Townsend, Blind Ego, Soen, Richard Henshall, Spock's Beard, Riverside, Tool, Time, The Valuator, Indigo Storm, Klone, Crown Lands, Kingcrow, Sylvan

SONG REVIEW πŸŽ΅πŸ“ Sjakal - Sleeping Beast

radioairplay.com independent new music

Sjakal - Sleeping Beast
Metal, Progressive, Melodic
Drammen, Norway

Overall Impression: Nordic Metal band Sjakal has just released their new song Sleeping Beast. Without sacrificing mayhem or earth-shattering riffs, Sjakal gives Sleeping Beast a melodic quality that keeps the track elevated and soaring. The blistering lead guitar work rips a hole through the horizon while the rhythm guitar bites with a Heavy Metal edge. There is no shortage of animalistic energy, but in no way is the track unrefined. The guitar solos and drum work all display a great deal of variation and virtuosity that is hard to come by. The bridge, in particular, shows a compositional vision that adds new layers of intrigue and mood to a tune that would satisfy even without the extras. With the release of Sleeping Beast, Sjakal gives fans of Metal exactly what they want and leaves them screaming for more.

Strongest Point(s): The instrumental work in Sleeping Beast is absolutely killer. But, the vocals and mix deserve their own recognition. The vocals hold nothing back in their primal delivery or attitude, but they still manage to be understood. This approach is much more effective in bringing in new fans from other styles of Metal than purely guttural screams or grunts. The mix is also well done. Each instrument and the vocals find their own space and are easily defined in the sound.

Target Audience Appeal: Fans of Metal, Prog, and Nordic Metal will definitely dig Sleeping Beast by Sjakal.

Artist target suggestions: Children of Bodom, Lamb of God, Jag Panzer, Nevermore, Nile, Mastadon, Metallica, Opeth, Otep, Gojira, In Flames, Slayer, Megadeth, Hatebreed, Arch Enemy, Devil Driver, Amon Amarth, Enslaved, Finntroll, Iron Maiden

SONG REVIEW πŸŽ΅πŸ“ INSANE - Confession

radioairplay.com independent new music

INSANE - Confession
Rock, Metal, Hard Rock
Tennessee, United States

Overall Impression: Chock full of the meatiest of riffs and catchiest of hooks, this gloriously groove-laden tune by hard rock metallers INSANE offers up both excellent performances and inspired writing to ensure listeners are most definitely left wanting more. "Confession" is a great blend of classic and contemporary hard rock and metal styles that is abundant in melody and rhythmically rousing from start to finish, and with a charismatic vocal performance at its core and gut-punching collection of riffs providing ample excitement, "Confession" is sure to appease the most hungry of metallers.

Strongest Point(s): It's clear that INSANE has great chemistry between its members and this can most certainly be felt throughout the music. This synergy ensures the performances feel both organic and accomplished and the way in which each and every element of "Confession" seamlessly connects with one another makes for a particularly thrilling arrangement that makes excellent use of dynamics and melodic creativity in order to really help create a feeling of flow within the music. The production is excellent and it's clear a great deal of attention has gone into the mix to ensure each and every element of "Confession" hits hard, from the thick low end provided by the bass to the dazzling highs of the lead guitar work, the production is well-balanced, rich in detail, and sonically exciting.

Target Audience Appeal: Undoubtedly "Confession" will go down a treat with the hard rock and metal lovers and fans of these styles will surely find the track fulfilling.

SONG REVIEW πŸŽ΅πŸ“ Freqology - Insomniac cartoon theatre

radioairplay.com independent new music

Freqology - Insomniac cartoon theatre
Metal
California, United States

Overall Impression: After experiencing the gloriously brutal assault on the senses that is "Insomniac Cartoon Theater", I think it's safe to say that listeners will have never heard some of their favorite cartoons be referenced in quite as ferocious a fashion as this. Both head poundingly heavy and hilariously bizarre in equal measure, Freqology combine the unrelenting nature of thrash with the viciously ruthless qualities of death metal in what I can best describe as a chest ripping, head-splitting cavalcade of savage guitar riffery and unrelenting vocal onslaughts. This is metal at its rawest and Freqology have a clear goal in mind, to quite simply blow your head off, and I'm all for it!

Strongest Point(s): It's rather refreshing to hear a metal band having some fun with their lyrics, there can be a sense of over seriousness in the metal genre here and there, and whilst there is certainly a time and place for hard-hitting social commentary and insightful looks into the human psyche, sometimes you need a track like "Insomniac Cartoon Theater" that's able to both raise a smile and batter you over the head with its deliciously meaty riffage. I'll be honest and say it was a joy hearing all the various cartoon references throughout the track, and despite the clearly heavy nature of the song, it still managed to be highly humorous which is a welcome change. Along with the comedic lyrical edge, the riffs are gloriously sludgy and the vocals have that unapologetic snarl to them that if anything, heightens the funny factor of the lyrics tenfold.

Target Audience Appeal: Metal lovers will undoubtedly get a solid kick from "Insomniac Cartoon Theater"

Artist target suggestions: Venom, Cannibal Corpse, System of A Down, Exodus, Slayer, As I Lay Dying, Napalm Death, Morbid Angel, Carcass, Death Angel, Entombed, Kreator, Sodom, Bolt Thrower, Decapitated, Lamb of God

SONG REVIEW πŸŽ΅πŸ“ DangerUS - My Mistake

radioairplay.com independent new music

DangerUS - My Mistake
Rock, Hard Rock, Metal
Illinois, United States

Overall Impression: Engulfing everything in its path, My Mistake by DangerUS lights a flame that cannot be extinguished. Blazing guitar riffs and machine-like percussion set the foundation for this new Hard Rock release. The lyrics cut ties and move on while raising a giant middle finger to the past. They are given a killer Rock vocal treatment with plenty of edge and guttural screaming. While the tune bears plenty of weight, fans of Post-Punk and Hardcore from the late 2000's will gravitate toward the energetic drive of the guitar work. There is never a dull moment, even as the tune passes through breakdowns and transitions. With the release of My Mistake, DangerUS establishes a killer Hard Rock sound and attitude that is ready for radio.

Strongest Point(s): DangerUS set aim for a particular sound with My Mistake, and nailed it. Each section flows flawlessly through one another without losing the attitude first set forward. The instrumental work is all done very well, and the mix is a big accomplishment.

Target Audience Appeal: Fans of Hard Rock, Hardcore, Screamo, and Post Punk will enjoy My Mistake by DangerUS.

SONG REVIEW πŸŽ΅πŸ“ Just One Fix - Gods & Devils

radioairplay.com independent new music

Just One Fix - Gods & Devils
Metal, Thrash, Death
Auckland, New Zealand

Overall Impression: Unapologetically brutal in its execution and displaying that classic sense of thrash-infused relentlessness, "Gods and Devils" is a one hundred a mile an hour assault on the senses that combines breakneck riffs, head pounding rhythms, and sheer vocal ferocity. Just One Fix has served up a classic-sounding thrash tune that possesses all the necessary trimmings in order to satisfy the thrash-hungry metal lovers out there, aggressive, vicious, and gloriously heavy, what more could a metal lover want or need?!

Strongest Point(s): Any great thrash track needs to be able to grab a listener's attention from the get-go, and it's safe to say "Gods and Devils" knows just how to do this. Opening with a rhythmic onslaught that combines rapid-fire rhythm guitar and a chest-rattling drum attack, the song wastes no time in establishing its general tone and goal, to hit its listeners as hard and heavy as humanly possible, and it does this brilliantly. It's worth noting that whilst speed is certainly the main dish on the menu, as is the case with many a thrash tune, it's great to see that "Gods and Devils" manage to find a good balance between its sections of rapid-fire pace and more rhythmically subdued sections, such as the case when the tempo is brought down a few pegs in certain areas of the track, opting for a more mid-paced, doom-inspired feel that contrasts brilliantly with the tracks faster-paced sections. The vocals perfectly embody that sense of ferociousness the thrash genre is synonymous with and serve as a perfect fit for this style of track.

Target Audience Appeal: This is definitely a tune for the thrash lovers out there and will undoubtedly appeal to fans of the genre.

SONG REVIEW πŸŽ΅πŸ“ STILLKNOCKED - Ten Levels Higher

radioairplay.com independent new music

STILLKNOCKED - Ten Levels Higher
Metal, Rock, Unplugged
HISINGSBACKA, Sweden

Overall Impression: With its fantastically chunky riffs, soaring vocal performances, and fitting "In your face" attitude, "Ten Levels Higher" has the necessary bite to it to ensure it hits its listeners hard. Stillknocked have delivered a gloriously meaty riffed slice of classic-sounding metal with mid-paced thrash leanings that boasts a particularly catchy chorus and that quintessential bombastic punch that the metal genre is renowned for.

Strongest Point(s): The decision to have female backing vocals is certainly a solid one and not only does it provide an interesting contrast to the main lead vocals, complimenting them effectively, but really helps heighten the effectiveness of the chorus greatly, giving it a striking sense of impact as well as catchiness. There is a great amount of variation in the tracks many riffs and melodic lines, I particularly think the darker-edged and more gritty direction the music takes in terms of harmony makes for a rather intense listening experience that works extremely well, helping to draw listeners into its more foreboding qualities.

Target Audience Appeal: This is definitely a tune for the classic metal lovers out there and I'm sure they'll appreciate what "Ten Levels Higher" has to offer.

Artist target suggestions: Manowar, W.A.S.P, Dokken, Rage, Halford, Primal Fear, Iron Saviour, U.D.O. Saxon, Black Label Society, Annihilator, Metal Church, Anvil, Jag Panzer, Enforcer, Vicious Rumours, Chastain, Motorhead

SONG REVIEW πŸŽ΅πŸ“ RAIGO - Mistress of Night

radioairplay.com independent new music

RAIGO - Mistress of Night
Metal, Rock
Australia

Overall Impression: Blending enigmatic intensity and tasteful brutality, RAIGO delivers an ode to seduction and the temptresses that wield it in their 2021 single, "Mistress of Night"! Monolithic walls of distortion mingle with bright and mysterious modal riffs to generate an energy of intrigue and sudden despair - brilliantly mirroring the allure and subsequent peril that befall those who engage with the archetypical "Mistress of Night".

Strongest Point(s): RAIGO's overall feel is incredible - wielding a massive and powerful sound while remaining tonally rich and musically engaging throughout! From the first moments, "Mistress of Night" reveals the group's love for the style and passion for the craft - drawing listeners in quickly with a deceptively bright central riff. This modal sound prompts an energy of excitement and intrigue in the listener and allows for jarring and impactful deviations from expectation as the track progresses. As the song enters the pre-chorus, the established progression takes on weight and grit - ascending with a sense of darkness and dread before the chorus reveals the true nature of the Mistress and the power of her thrall. Powerful moments like the return to the chorus at 2:00 showcase brutal vocal control with viscerally satisfying results, taking the layered vocal tones and expanding them for brief variations that keep the listener riveted! All together, the elemements at work in "Mistress of Night" deliver an immersive and intense listening experience with deep re-playability!

Target Audience Appeal: Fans of Metal, Alt. Metal, Nu Metal, and any surrounding subgenres will find plenty to dig into with "Mistress of Night" - the 2021 single revealing a narrative skill and powerhouse sound at work in RAIGO, prompting eager ears towards whatever the group produces next! - Jon W.

SONG REVIEW πŸŽ΅πŸ“ Aaron J Sherwood - I'll See You Again

radioairplay.com independent new music

Aaron J Sherwood - I'll See You Again
Alternative/Alt.Rock, Metal, Grunge
New Jersey, United States

Overall Impression: Aaron J. Sherwood has recorded and released his new song I'll See You Again. Powered by an acoustic guitar, I'll See You Again takes listeners on a deeply personal journey. The slow groove crawls over the Earth with a sound most fitting in the world of Alternative Rock. Diving into the relationship between a father and son, the lyrics cast a somber and despairing tone. They serve as a release and long for another day to say all of the things that should have been said. They are sung with a deep, dark tone and resonate low in the listener's chest. This is a song for those looking to heal, but are still in the thick of it. Overall, I'll See You Again by Aaron J. Sherwood is a raw and moving song that comes from the heart.

Strongest Point(s): The lyrics in I'll See You Again find a very particular mood. They thread the lines between sadness, regret, gratitude, and hope. They are the sort of thing you need to start overcoming a low point.

Target Audience Appeal: Fans of Acoustic Rock and Alternative Rock will enjoy I'll See You Again by Aaron J. Sherwood.
