SONG REVIEW πŸŽ΅πŸ“ heyloband - When this is Over

radioairplay.com independent new music

heyloband - When this is Over
Alternative/Alt. Rock, Electronica, Alternative Pop
Perth, Australia

Overall Impression: "When This is Over" is a captivating new release from the New York based indie group, heyloband. This mid tempo track features a blurry yet blissful sound, provided by shimmering keys, tremolo electric guitars, and a fuzzed-out bass, all driven by syncopated lo-fi rock drums to serve as the ideal backdrop for the memorable melodies carried out by double tracked female vocals and occasionally reinforced by soft male harmonies. A sinister bridge at around the 1:45 mark provides stark contrast to the overall optimism and sunny vibe, adding an intriguing dynamic and tonal shift that draws the listener deeper into the song. Heyloband's "When This is Over" should have very little problem finding an audience among indie rock fans, particularly shoegaze and dream pop enthusiasts.

Strongest Point(s): Nice production, solid mix. Great vibe and overall energy. Lots of interesting stuff going on here sonically, very thoughtful arrangement and instrumentation.Intriguing sound palette in general, really neat blend of guitars and keys, and artful use of fx. Excellent song structure, great progression and melodies, and I absolutely loved the bridge, both musically and lyrically as it drives the narrative along and offers great depth and variation. Vocals sound pretty good, I like the filters and processing, especially on the female voices. Terrific song all around, and a fantastic track that sounds great for a DIY production. Outstanding work, all around!

Target Audience Appeal: Fans of Pop/Rock, Contemporary Pop/Rock, Indie Pop/Rock, Indie Pop, Alternative Rock, Dream Pop, Shoegaze, Neo-Psychedelia

Artist target suggestions: Yo La Tengo, Best Coast, Camera Obscura, The Beths, Galaxie 500, Beach House, My Bloody Valentine, Cocteau Twins, Belle and Sebastian

SONG REVIEW πŸŽ΅πŸ“ Project Isolar - Embrace me

radioairplay.com independent new music

Project Isolar - Embrace me
Alternative/Alt. Rock, Electronica, Classical
Hoganas, Sweden

Overall Impression: Project Isolar bares their soul with the release of the new tune Embrace Me. Opening with solemn, heartfelt piano, Embrace Me instantly casts an intimate and raw atmosphere. This new Alternative Rock tune is not scared of being vulnerable, and uses elements of Euro Pop and Rock to make its statement known. After the piano runs its course, an electrified drum groove kicks in to bring in the next verse. By this point, the vocals have already made a strong impression on the listener. Powerfully bright and nasal, they soar high above the groove and give the song a unique sound that sticks in the listener's mind. They loudly open their arms and create a warm, welcoming environment. This builds very nicely from the initial piano opening, and gives a strong sense of growth to the tune. Overall, Embrace Me by Project Insolar is the musical hug needed by all listeners, and is enjoyable from beginning to end.

Strongest Point(s): The arrangement and production value in Embrace Me really stand out. The tune builds up from a very intimate starting point, and ends up soaring well above the horizon. The music grows and adds layers of color and intensity to keep the tune very intriguing. The production level is also very nice. Nothing sounds out of place, edgy, or too raw in the mix. The delays and other effects used in the vocals are also made very tastefully. Nicely done!

Target Audience Appeal: Fans of Euro Pop and Alternative Rock should listen to Project Insolar's new tune Embrace Me.

SONG REVIEW πŸŽ΅πŸ“ Lakotah - Silver Eyes

radioairplay.com independent new music

Lakotah - Silver Eyes
Alternative/Alt.Rock, Rock, Electronica
California, United States

Overall Impression: Los Angeles-based Lakotah has released her newest song Silver Eyes. Twisting and turning, Silver Eyes features a Grungy sound powered by guitars and an ominous presence. The gritty groove and dark attitude throws back to Rock from the 90's and early 2000's, and is a welcomed sound amongst today's music. Always searching, the lyrics long for someone specific to fill a void. They dial in on a particular human feeling, while leaving the listener to fill in the details. Lakotah sings with a powerful rock edge and killer tone. She invests herself in the performance and holds nothing back when behind the mic. As the tune progresses, listeners will likely find themselves in need of some fresh air after experiencing the waves of intensity. Overall, Silver Eyes by Lakotah is a killer new Alt. Rock song that makes its presence known with attitude and an edgy sound.

Strongest Point(s): Lakotah's singing really stands out for its command and strong presence. However, the grungy rock sound from the band should not be overlooked. They have a killer sound and make smart choices with effects and texture.

Target Audience Appeal: Fans of Alt. Rock, Grunge, and Hard Rock will enjoy Silver Eyes by Lakotah.

Artist target suggestions: Serel, Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, Imagine Dragons, The Smashing Pumpkins, Alanis Morisette, Florence + The Machines, Gwen Stefani, No Doubt, Hollywood Undead, Evanescence

SONG REVIEW πŸŽ΅πŸ“ Sonic Space Lab - There's no Gravity

Sonic Space Lab - There's no Gravity
Alternative/Alt. Rock, Electronica
Dunedin, New Zealand

Overall Impression: Sonic Space Lab delivers a sound as immersive and as intriguing as their name suggests, building cavernous sonic spaces from scratch and filling them with hypnotic ostinatos, entrancing effects, and captivating lyrics in order to transport listeners far beyond the confines of their immediate surroundings. Their 2020 single, There's No Gravity is an ideal representation of the depth and draw of this sound - fully engaging from end to end.

Strongest Point(s): Fantastic use of spacial effects! The mix is very well balanced and makes plenty of room for each component - no obvious overlapping of frequencies or unnecessarily long reverb tails. Killer part writing - really love the fullness of the bass and the repetitive guitar part. Stellar dynamic development, growing throughout the song to gradually ramp up the intensity. Great harmony at 3:12, and amazing synth solo directly after! The otherworldly whispers are a really engaging element as well - all in all, this is a really awesome song!

SONG REVIEW πŸŽ΅πŸ“Social Raygun - Favored Son

radioairplay.com independent new music

Social Raygun - Favored Son
Alternative/Alt. Rock, Blues, Electronica
Arizona, United States

Overall Impression: With the trademark vocal qualities of the genre, Social Raygun's sound is wonderfully steeped in the Alt. Rock tradition - and their original song Favored Son masterfully walks the line between grungy darkness and melodic elevation. The character of the Favored Son is at once endearing and disconcerting, and the instrumental and vocal deliveries of Social Raygun bring him to life with skill.

Strongest Point(s): Awesome song concept, lyrically and instrumentally! The chorus is lovely; the vocal harmonies and sudden burst of melancholic melody really stand out against the rest of the sound, with the doubled guitar melody adding a special layer to the feeling. Expert transitions between the sections, and awesome instrumental work all the way through. Great solo at around 2:57 - perfectly dreary.

Target Audience Appeal: Perfectly conveying the lyrical tone through instrumental and vocal inflection, Favored Son is an Alt. Rock staple - the tones and deliveries are completely aligned with the genre, and the song itself is uniquely artistic. Fans of the genre should look to Social Raygun for a sound that's familiar, but a feeling that's all new and completely original. Really great stuff - this one doesn't even call for an explosion, it's great as it is.

Artist target suggestions: Band of Skulls, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Eddie Vedder, Radiohead, Portishead, Soundgarden, Cage The Elephant

SONG REVIEW πŸŽ΅πŸ“ Sonic Space Lab - There's no Gravity

Great harmony at 3:12, and amazing synth solo directly after! The otherworldly whispers are a really engaging element as well - all in all, this is a really awesome song!

Areas of Improvement: The only immediate improvement that comes to mind is that the lower-register vocals aren't as engaging as the higher harmony section at 3:12. Introducing that higher register a little earlier on might go far in terms of incentivizing listeners to stick around until the end. Otherwise, this is stellar!

Overall Impression:
Artfully channeling the ambivalence of a broken relationship, Muva Dame's Tell Me captures the struggles of interpersonal drama with skill and grace.  Torn between letting go and taking advantage of what's available, Tell Me outlines the way we fall back into arms that we know can't hold us, and the talents of Muva Dame deliver the message with passionate and breathtaking vocals and a smooth track that'll have you coming back for more.

Strongest Point(s):
Tell Me has a flawless mix - the vocals are bright and sparkling, and every bit of the instrumental supports the voice perfectly.  The beat hits hard, and keeps the energy moving smoothly.  These harmonies are stellar, and the hooks are plentiful and powerful.  Somehow relaxing and hype at the same time, this track is solid gold.  Well done!

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT ⭐️ Dezabel - Another Drink

radioairplay.com independent new music

Dezabel - Another Drink
Pop, R&B, Soul, Electronica
Switzerland

Dezabel reminds us of Alt. Pop meets R&B. A little Halsey meets Kehlani if you will. Delivering the relenting hook, with a soft, yet compelling element for you to stay in the moment and "pour another drink".  - RadioAirplay.com

Songwriter and producer Bilgi gained his musical background back in the 90s at the ACM (The Academy of Contemporary Music in Zurich). He continued to build up his knowledge in Songwriting and Music Production at Berklee College of Music. The influence of Pop, Jazz, Film Music, and Contemporary R&B cannot be overheard. Bilgi’s goal is to write sophisticated popular music keeping the sound commercial yet giving it a special aura. With his lyrics, he tells stories in the course of which the listeners find themselves. He typically collaborates with artists from the United States and the United Kingdom.

Tell us more about "Another Drink"
Songwriter and producer Dezabel expertly fuses pop, jazz, soul, and electronica
to make instantly lovable tracks. Collaborating with singers from around the
world, he creates a sound with universal appeal. His latest release, ‘When It
Comes To You,’ showcases his gift for laid back grooves and irresistible
melodies.

Tell us more about "When It Comes To You"
With its combination of organic instruments and cutting edge production, ‘When
It Comes To You’ feels fresh and familiar at the same time. The vocalist delivers
an impassioned R&B inspired performance that grabs the listener’s attention and
doesn’t let go until the closing notes. With its sensual mood and romantic
overtones, ‘When It Comes To You’ is a dose of pop perfection.

How are you impacted as a musician during this time?
I'm mainly trying out new ideas that I typically don't dare to do. So for example I experiment crossing various genres with unpopular instruments (Alp Horn, Cembalo) etc.
Further more I'm just writing, writing, proto typing new song ideas an lyrics.

Can you describe your sound in one ramble-on sentence?
When Zurich meets L.A.

What's your earliest music-related memory growing up?
I was about a 5-6 years old buy and was spending the ski holiday at my school friends house. He had an older brother that would hate other people to be in his room. One day he was away so me and my friend entered his room when I saw his walls filled with posters of the Beatles. We started to listen to the huge collection of Beatles albums he had. At that time (mid 70's) of course we had only tapes and vinyl albums and we weren't experiences to handle them. So it ended it a pretty big mess with scratches on a few disk and tape salad on the floor. But we had great fun.....until he came back!

Do you write/compose your own songs? Briefly describe your songwriting process.
Yes, I do. However quite often I envolve other musicians.
I typically start with a story I have in my mind or something that I experienced that I would like to write about. In other words, I first write the prototype of lyrics. When I feel comfortable with it try to sketch a musical idea, by typically first finding the right chord progression for the mood I'd like to introduce. Once I have these two elements things progress pretty fast. Find a phrasing rhythm of melody ideas after that trying to evolve a good hook. Once I have these important elements I try to bring in some production to see in which direction this could evolve. Once the prototype, let's call it an alpha version I typically share my ideas with friends, family and other musicians to get their feedback and bring in some ideas. When this is done I end up with a beta version that I send to songwriters (typically 2-3) to review the lyrics (I'm Swiss, so I need a native English speaking person to collab with) and the melody. This is where it really get interesting, since I let the songwriters bring in ideas and variations. After this is done I enter the last stage which would be getting the right artist to sing my song and then making some adaptions to support the vocals. Last stage is the mixing, which I do myself. The mastering is done externally so far.

Does anything in particular inspire you to write? What get's your creative juices flowing?
Peace, peace, peace... In the past I was waiting for inspiration and I almost every time ended up in getting vague ideas but nothing really concrete. So I started to analyze: why was it like that? My conclusion was, that I wanted to force it but the more I forced it the less the ideas would flow. So, whenever I feel relaxed, no tight schedule ahead, that's when I go into the studio and start working on it. I took Andrea Stolpe's class "Commercial Songwriting Techniques" which help me a lot. It has nothing to do with commercial writing, but how to create a process to write lyrics without getting stuck. Awesome!

What do you like more: Performing live or recording in the studio?
I personally like to work in the studio, that's my second home!

Any on stage moments you'd like to share? C’mon, don’t be shy!
I don't perform live, since my singers are typically out of the US. On one of my last birthdays I played the piano and my daughter would sing one of my songs. After the performance I saw some of the audience having tears in their eyes. This was a very heartfelt moment. This is a song that I'm going to release very soon!

What has been a highlight for you in the past year? (Either personally or for your music career.)
One of the greatest moments for me was, when my song "Another Drink" was added to an offical Spotify playlist. I felt so honored and grateful. Every time a new radio station adds one of my few songs to their playlist I try to tune in live, to enjoy this very moment.

If you were to cover another band/artist's song/record, which would you pick and why?
There are so many great musicians out there and I listen to all sorts of styles. If I could sing I'd probably pick something from Sting.

What are some artists/bands that you're into at the moment? Or any particular song you find yourself listening to over and over?
As mentioned previously I listen to all sorts of music and I don't have particular preferences. I can tell you to what I'm not listening to, that list is way shorter. For example I'm absolutely not into LoFi or Gangster Hip Hop.

What do you enjoy doing outside of music? Does your hobby rejuvenate your creativity?
I personally like reading and spending time out in nature with my good friend Newton, our dog. He's the best. I'm having such a great time with him!

What's one thing people should know about you?
That's a tough one. I think that I'm very simple person. I hate playing games or pretending to be somebody I ain't. So in short, once you know me for half an hour, you know what get.

If you had one message to give to your fans, what would it be?
I hate to preach a message. I'm here to communicate and share my thoughts and experiences with my music.
