Jožef Mali - Mum & Baby Deer (Instrumental) Blues, Pop Rock, Soft Rock Kranj, Slovenia Overall Impression: Slovenian guitarist/composer Jožef Mali instills a sense of deep serenity and tranquility in listeners with his release of "Mum and Baby Deer." This instrumental guitar composition incorporates the sounds of a variety of birds, their trills, caws and warbles weaving in and out of this piece's folk-inspired melodies to give it an earthy, organic atmosphere that transports the listener to a secluded forest setting. Mali does a superb job of arranging here, as he employs a variety of techniques to convey the theme using multiple voices. Happy Curmudgeons - All On You Rock, Contemporary Folk, Blues Michigan, United States Overall Impression: A bright, airy feel-good song, “All On You” is the last release from the band Happy Curmudgeons. The song is an uplifting and happy tune whose message is that the choices we make are all ours. It is a song about having responsibility for ourselves and our decisions and emotions, implying that love is all in your mind, if we don’t love ourselves first, we can’t love another. You have to believe in love, put it out there, and share it with others. Strongest Point(s): The vocals and melody combine to form a cohesive composition. The song is passionately sung and the combination of Jeff Warner’s vocals to his counterpart Amy Dixon-Lavery adds variety and texture to the song. Warner’s voice has a raspy, soulful, bluesy quality to it, whereas Dixon’s vocals have a rich more controlled quality and element to them. A compliment to their vocals is the song’s mel...

Jacques Skutt - High on Blues Blues, Rock Florida, United States Overall Impression: High on Blues by Jacques Skutt is a slow burn of emotion and the Blues. Like falling asleep after a long day, the tune swirls forward with inner thoughts and the desire for a new, better morning. Skutt has honed in on that 'Blue' feeling and created powerfully relatable lyrics. They vividly describe feeling a certain type of down that can only be cured by playing the guitar. His guitar magically takes away the pain, and sets him up high. Skutt misses no opportunity to showcase his guitar skills in High On Blues. Opening with a soulful lead line, the tune is rife with impressively emotive solos and fills that reflect the lyrics and mood. With the release of High On Blues, Jacques Skutt shows a strong grasp of the Blues that makes for a soulful listening experience. Strongest Point(s): Jacques Skutt has painted a vivid picture of feeling the Blues with High On Blues. T...

The Tor - Burned Ashes Blues, Blues Rock, Rock and Roll New Jersey, United States Overall Impression: The Tor sends shockwaves through the air with the release of Burned Ashes. This new Blues-Rock tune brings heavy doses of ripping guitars, keys, and an in-your-face attitude to make an impact on all who are near. The crunchy groove moves with a quick tempo and rolling feel. Burning like embers, it is a solid foundation for the solos and vocals. When the first guitar solo hits, the listener is taken by its red-hot tone. It sears across the horizon with emotive licks and an edgy attitude. This is also evident in the final solo which ends the tune on a high note. Breaking up this guitarist's paradise is an explorative keyboard solo that places the tune in a completely new light. It adds an essential character that will bring in more fans than guitars can do by themselves. Overall, Burned Ashes by The Tor is an in-your-face Blues Rock tune that makes its statemen...

Jacques Skutt - 1970 Blues, Rock Florida, United States Overall Impression: Grooving slowly side to side, 1970 by Jacques Skutt instantly pulls at the listener's core with a dark, Bluesy sound. This tune by Skutt has been in hibernation but is definitely ready to be awakened. Skutt bears his soul with his vocal performance in 1970. He does a fine job carrying the tune and leading the listener through the song's emotions. Sadness permeates the lyrics and follows Jacques as he tells his heartbreaking story. The guitars do a fine job accenting and punctuating the emotional moments, and offer essential snapshots of relief. In general, there is a weight hovering above the song that slowly increases the pressure. It is not until the very end that this pressure is released and the listener can sit back in their seats. It is a very cool and highly effective idea that is perfectly fit for the Blues. Strongest Point(s): Jacques Skutt has a very cool song under...

Wayne Madder - Angels Blues, Rock Blues, Jazzy blues, Country blues, Singer/Songwriter Greenbank, Canada Overall Impression: Wonderfully understated and delicately tender in its approach, "Angels" is a wonderfully written folk piece that is superbly performed and affectionately arranged. Wayne Madder lovingly presents his listeners with a song of such substance and heart that you can't help but be taken in by its beautifully expressed ideas and concepts. Strongest Point(s): I would usually be wary of the use of natural ambient white noise in certain contexts, but I believe it works really well in "Angel". It acts as a rather warm underlay for the music and gives the song a certain rustic charm that adds to the overall personality of the tune as well as adds a great dash of authenticity to its folk-inspired roots. Wayne gives a truly endearing vocal performance that manages to gracefully envelop the listener in its warm tones and supple...

Brad James Swallow - Loving You Blues, Rock Louisiana, United States Overall Impression: You really can't beat a wholesome slice of blues-drenched rock'n'roll and Brad James Swallow serves up a particularly generous piece with his gloriously riff-tastic and lick-rich "Loving You", a groove infused mid-paced blues rocker that combines catchy hooks, great character, and a genuine love for the genre. There's a certain rawness to "Loving You" that really helps give it that signature "down'n'dirty" stripped back feeling that's synonymous with the blues-rock genre, and between the track's brilliant rhythmic bite and clearly defined sense of melody, Brad's gravelly vocal performance perfectly captures the unbridled spirit of the blues, ensuring listeners are treated to a solid listening experience that is abundant in feel. Strongest Point(s): The performances are certainly strong and effectively convey...
