Jožef Mali - Mum & Baby Deer (Instrumental)
Blues, Pop Rock, Soft Rock
Kranj, Slovenia
Overall Impression: Slovenian guitarist/composer Jožef Mali instills a sense of deep serenity and tranquility in listeners with his release of "Mum and Baby Deer." This instrumental guitar composition incorporates the sounds of a variety of birds, their trills, caws and warbles weaving in and out of this piece's folk-inspired melodies to give it an earthy, organic atmosphere that transports the listener to a secluded forest setting. Mali does a superb job of arranging here, as he employs a variety of techniques to convey the theme using multiple voices. From legato sustained notes to brief pizzicato phrases, sometimes doubled and at other times harmonized, Mali ensures that audiences will never tire of this delightfully pleasant tune. Jožef Mali's "Mum and Baby Deer" should appeal to fans of contemporary folk and instrumental music, as well as new age enthusiasts.
Strongest Point(s): Solid production and mix. Fantastic arrangement, excellent variations. Outstanding vibe and mood, very relaxed and contemplative. Great use of dynamics. Love the birds, outstanding choice to integrate them into the work (see reviewer comments). Incredibly catchy melodies. Nice job of cycling through different playing styles to give them different characters and qualities, while still retaining the motifs. Overall it's a lovely, well plotted and thought out composition, and a fine recording that should have possible multimedia applications if you should decide to go that route. Terrific piece, and a great track that was a pleasure to review!
