Phoenix Duo - The Boxer Folk, Americana, Singer songwriter Oregon, United States Overall Impression: Oregon-based Phoenix have put a new spin on the Simon & Garfunkel classic The Boxer. While still capturing the song's essence, this version seems to have a smoother sonic landscape than the original. Where the original had bursts of percussive effects and protruding bass lines, Phoenix takes a more streamlined approach and condenses everything down to homogenized guitars and bass with harmonized vocals. This approach results in a less whimsical, but more down-to-earth and relatable performance that is quite effective. Tim and Kathy sing with a beautifully blended sound. Tim takes on the lead confidently while Kathy provides angelic harmonies that create a magical listening experience. It takes guts to cover such a famous and delicately tricky tune, but Phoenix have made a very fine version of The Boxer that fans of Folk and the original are sure to enjoy. ...

Wade Hatcher - Song Included Folk, Singer songwriter, Country Pop Arkansas, United States Overall Impression: I do love some good ol' classic blues-based rock, the boogier the better in fact, and if one thing is for certain it's that Wade Hatcher has certainly managed to capture the easy-going, fun-loving nature of the genre. With its stylistically fitting sense of rhythm, catchy melodies, and a pleasant sense of character, this is a solid effort, and whilst there are a few areas that could do with some minor tweaking, there is most definitely great energy here that listeners will most definitely appreciate. Strongest Point(s): The short intersperses of lead guitar are a welcome addition to the arrangement and help to inject some nice extra dashes of melody into the song that compliment the main vocal lines well. As with any driving blues rocker, energy is key and the overall rhythmic momentum that's created definitely helps keep those energy leve...

Gordon Michaels - Hey Doreen Pop, Rock, Singer Songwriter Maryland, United States Overall Impression: Gordon Michaels hits a high standard with the release of his new Pop Rock tune Hey Doreen. A tune for moving on, Hey Doreen looks back on a soured relationship and leaves the past behind. The piano-based groove drives forward with a cheerful energy that contrasts the wittiness of the lyrics. Airing out some grievances, the lyrics call out former lover Doreen and pick apart aspects of control, truth, and religious belief in the relationship. Full of clever turns of phrase, Hey Doreen's lyrics say all of the things you wanted to say, but couldn't think of in the moment. Michaels sings with an exuberance and charm perfect for Pop. He effortlessly carries the tune and has a sound that draws listeners in. Overall, Hey Doreen is a completely polished Pop Rock tune that merits multiple listens and stays in your head all day. George Lindsay - Just Get Lost Alternative/Alt. Rock, Contemporary Folk, Singer Songwriter Glasgow, United Kingdom Overall Impression: George Lindsay serves up some tough love with his new Country tune Just Get Lost. At the end of its rope, Just Get Lost looks in the eyes of those who have hurt us, and kindly raises a middle finger. This Country tune has no room for backstabbers, cheats, or bad folk. In contrast to the roughness of the lyrics, the vocals have a brighter, gentle quality. George Lindsay sings with a tone that is suited for Country and would work just as well in Folk. His timbre and general demeanor welcomes the listener in. While this contrast is clear, the tune still works and reminds listeners that anger can be expressed in many different ways. Overall, Just Get Lost by George Lindsay is a fine new Country tune that serves as a lesson to treat people well, or you might not be welcomed back. Strongest Point(s): The country groove in Just Get L...
