SONG REVIEW 🎵📝 Those Dirty Lines - Dirty

radioairplay.com independent new music

Those Dirty Lines - Dirty
Alternative/Alt. Rock, Indie, Dance, Punk
Canada

Overall Impression: Chock full of gloriously dirty-sounding synths, plenty of melodic sass, and an undeniably cheeky sense of character, "Dirty" is an unapologetically straight-to-the-point alternative rocker that revels in its definite sense of musical identity and brilliantly brash demeanor. Those Dirty Lines have served up a sonically exciting tune that combines flamboyant performances with a ton of personality, resulting in a track that has a definite sense of swagger that listeners will find both refreshing and quite simply fun.

Strongest Point(s): With its punk-like attitude, gritty alternative rock elements, and electro synth-infused flourishes, "Dirty" is a marvelously eclectic mix of styles. Whilst the growly nature of the bass and gritty synth sounds conjure up both elements of alternative and industrial styles, the hard-hitting drums and punk-infused vocals certainly inject the track with that quintessential rock attitude that really heightens the songs overall energetic qualities. Particular merit also needs to be awarded to the production and overall mix, this is a great sounding track that boasts both great clarity and detail, it's clearly evident that time has been put into making the track feel both alive and dynamic, melodies jump out and grab listeners attention with great precision and the bombastic nature of the songs rhythmic elements ensure audiences are kept enthralled from start to finish.

Target Audience Appeal: This is an interesting blend of alternative rock and electro elements and I'm sure lovers of these styles will find "Dirty" to be an interesting combination of these genres.

Artist target suggestions: Nine Inch Nails, Arcade Fire, Muse, TV On The Radio, LCD Soundsytem, Hot Chip, The Rapture, Junior Boys, Digitalism, X-Terra, Bodyrockers

SONG REVIEW 🎵📝 Timothy Lee Freeman - Jesus Is Calling

radioairplay.com independent new music

Timothy Lee Freeman - Jesus Is Calling
Rock, Alternative, Punk
Virginia, United States

Overall Impression: Whilst it may be somewhat rough around the edges, there are still some good ideas in here, and with a bit of further refinement and added polish this can definitely become the track it deserves to be. It's not easy recording and writing your own music so I always commend musicians who endeavor to push their creativity forward and Timothy Lee Freeman clearly has a passion for what he's doing and that's excellent.

Strongest Point(s): There are some great riffs in here and there are clearly some inspired ideas throughout, the descending melodic riff heard from 0:38 for instance has a deliciously dark quality to it that contrasts well with the more hopeful sounding riffs found later on in the track. Whilst the recording and arrangement could do with some refinement, there is definitely an ambiance to the track that gives it a certain unique quality, very much in a psychedelic vein that is quite the assault on the senses at times.

Target Audience Appeal: In its iteration, it's hard to state which audiences this will best target, but it most closely aligns with the experimental rock genre.

Artist target suggestions: Melvins, Mudvayne, Seether, Shinedown, Swans, Daughters, Stint, Sonic Youth, The Birthday Party, Shellac, Pere Ubu, Savages, Have A Nice Life, Hood

SONG REVIEW 🎵📝 badbob band - Brand New Start

radioairplay.com independent new music

badbob band - Brand New Start
Alternative/Alt. Rock, Punk, Ska
San Jose, United States

Overall Impression: Badbob Band has put out their new hard rock tune Brand New Start. Kicking down the front door and holding nothing back, Brand New Start thrashes its way into the spotlight. High octane guitars and a speedy tempo give this hard rock tune colors of punk and thrash. Desiring a new beginning, the lyrics look for a new place, on the outside of time, to find a brand new start. They are sung with a punk rock attitude that has no room for questions or critiques. Mirroring the tune's high energy, guitar solos tear through the stratosphere and leave no fret untouched. With the release of Brand New Start, Badbob Band grabs listener's attention with a killer sound and high energy attitude.

Strongest Point(s): The guitar work in Brand New Start grabs attention, and upholds the edgy attitude of the tune. It shows its face at the beginning and end of the tune, creating a new voice to complement the vocals.

Target Audience Appeal: Fans of Punk, Thrash, and Hard Rock will enjoy Brand New Start by Badbob Band.

SONG REVIEW 🎵📝 Scruff Merchants - Whiskey Lodge

radioairplay.com independent new music

Scruff Merchants - Whiskey Lodge
Rock, Punk
Dublin, Ireland

Overall Impression: Having spent two decades on the lam unwashed and unashamed, Scruff Merchants emerge from the obscure wilds of Dublin, Ireland to deliver the quick and calamitous original track, "Whiskey Lodge" - crafting a modern pub song from powerful Punk Rock roots to immortalize The Hammered One in all his inebriated glory!

Strongest Point(s): Short, scruffy, and to the point, "Whiskey Lodge" packs a powerhouse Punk Rock experience into exactly one minute of audio - making the song both exhilarating and endlessly re-playable! Furiously strummed acoustic guitar blends with full-throated bass and rock steady drums as a gruff and stylistically excellent lead vocal takes up the charge, delivering both question and answer surrounding John's whereabouts and drinking capabilities. Scruff Merchants make full use of left and right panning to give the song a surprisingly immersive feel, and overdubbed backing vocals in different registers practically transport listeners directly to the barstool next to the one that John's occupying. For such a quick ride, the amount of detail and variation at work make "Whiskey Lodge" charming and memorable - perfect for live settings with full call-and-response potential!

Target Audience Appeal: Fans of that quintessential Punk Rock pulse and power will fall immediately in line with what Scruff Merchants are selling, and the lyrical wit and performative energy at work in "Whiskey Lodge" stand to make the track not only a great candidate for modern drinking anthem of the decade, but also a bold and promising introduction to the renegades that crafted it! Excellent as it is in all its audio glory, "Whiskey Lodge" is practically begging for a rough and rowdy live setting to reach its full performative potential! - Jon W.

Artist target suggestions: Beach Slang, NOFX, Dropkick Murphys, Screeching Weasel, Mclusky, Mineral, Flogging Molly, Make Do And Mend, The Rumjacks, Polar Bear Club, Rival Schools, No Knife, Jawbreaker, Fiddler's Green, Texas Is The Reason, Hot Water Music, Carbon Leaf, Banner Pilot, Bomb the Music Industry!, Firkin, Jets To Brazil, Rainer Maria

SONG REVIEW 🎵📝 Timothy Lee Freeman - Catch 22

radioairplay.com independent new music

Timothy Lee Freeman - Catch 22
Rock, Alternative, Punk
Virginia, United States

Overall Impression: Both writing and recording music is no easy task and whilst there are some issues with "Catch 22", I always have the utmost respect for musicians who have the drive and perseverance when it comes to making music. Timothy has made an extremely commendable effort and there are certainly some excellent ideas in here, I'm sure with a bit of refinement and fine tweaking here and there "Catch 22" can be further improved upon and what is learned from this process will definitely help future recordings.

Strongest Point(s): There is a great sense of attitude throughout "Catch 22" which fits with the alternative rock style perfectly, and this trait is well weaved into the lyrics and vocal performance, which interestingly adopts a stylistically intriguing monotone approach that gives the track a certain edge that works very well in its favour. There is a great mix of styles in "Catch 22", there is an obvious alternative rock inspiration but there are also interesting hints of punk and even grunge in places that make for an intriguing listen.

Target Audience Appeal: This definitely has strong alternative rock vibes with an added sprinkle of punk for good measure.

Artist target suggestions: Placebo, The Smashing Pumpkins, Staind, Creed, Hinder, Fuel, Flyleaf, Stooges, The Damned, Sham 69, Fugazi, Killing Joke, Danzig, Mudhoney

SONG REVIEW 🎵📝 Souls Worn Thin - Kill Your T.V.

radioairplay.com independent new music

Souls Worn Thin - Kill Your T.V.
Alternative/Alt. Rock, Punk, Grunge
Washington, United States

Overall Impression: Blistering performances combine with a brilliantly unapologetic attitude in this high-octane pop-punk rocker by "Souls Worn Thin" who have conjured up a lyrically charged and socially satirical anthem for the modern generation to sink their teeth into. "Kill Your T.V." is an excellent piece of songwriting that highlights the best of what the punk genre has to offer and offers an authentic and wholly honest experience that was a joy to listen to, and being a fan of the genre myself, it's great to hear newer bands continuing to push the genre forward. Great work!

Strongest Point(s): Not only are the performances very strong, but the combined energy of the performances help give the track its sense of immediacy and purpose. This feels very much like a live performance and as a result, the performances are that bit more engaging and gloriously bombastic in nature, which is exactly what's needed for an attention-grabbing pop-punk rocker such as this. The more subdued interlude that begins from around 2:37 works extremely well and creates a great amount of contrast when compared to the more intense sections that surround it. Not only is a strong sense of ambiance achieved with the stripped-back instrumentation and reverb-laden lead guitar, but the wider feeling of space makes the climactic build-up leading back into the chorus even more impactful and attention-grabbing. It's also worth noting that whilst the mix is solid and ensures each and every element of the track is clearly heard and distinct from one another, there is a certain rawness to the production which fits the style of the song perfectly and aligns with the punk aesthetic perfectly.

Target Audience Appeal: This is definitely one for pop-punk lovers. With its strong performances and solid songwriting, lovers of the genre will find themselves undoubtedly connecting strongly with "Kill Your T.V."

Artist target suggestions: A Day To Remember, Green Day, Jimmy Eat World, The Offspring, New Found Glory, Good Charlotte, Rise Against, blink-182, Simple Plan, Paramore, We The Kings, Sum 41, Mayday Parade, AFI

SONG REVIEW 🎵📝 Lisa Doll & the Rock n Roll Romance - Do The Bummer

radioairplay.com independent new music

Lisa Doll & the Rock n Roll Romance - Do The Bummer
Alternative/Alt. Rock, Garage Rock, Punk
Maryland, United States

Overall Impression: Filled to the brim with a hearty dose of unbridled attitude and wrapped up in a marvelously dirty and grainy production, "Do The Bummer" hearken back to the days of classic stripped-back punk, with its unapologetic vocal snarl, breakneck speed, and impenitent nature, Lisa Doll & the Rock'n'Roll Romance deliver a quick-fire, straight to the point musical statement that grabs you and gives you a good shake before deciding to let you go.

Strongest Point(s): One could describe punk music as being the most unapologetically unpolished of the music genres, however, this rather rough-around-the-edges aesthetic has always been part of the point, its "against the grain" stance is what makes the style one of the most honest and authentic, and "Do The Bummer" captures the raw essence of the punk genre brilliantly, this is simply a snapshot of a band doing their thing, and the result is an organic performance that's rawness only adds to the tracks overall effectiveness. The lead vocals have plenty of bite to them and embody the spirit of the genre perfectly, whilst the backing band provides an uncompromising rhythmic assault on the senses. At 1:50, this is certainly a sprightly tune, but it definitely works well in this context, it helps the song sustain a high level of intensity without overstaying its welcome, which is not an easy balance to strike

Target Audience Appeal This is certainly a song for punk lovers, short, sweet, and straight to the point.

Artist target suggestions: Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, The Distillers, The Sex Pistols, Misfits, Dead Kennedys, Danzig, Bad Religion, Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Subhumans, NOFX, Black Flag, Pennywise, The Dead Milkmen, Ramones, Rancid, Social Distortion, Spinnerette, Anti-Flag, Operation Ivy, Guttermouth, Descendents

SONG REVIEW 🎵📝 Johnny Void and The Others - What I Say Is Cool

radioairplay.com independent new music

Johnny Void and The Others - What I Say Is Cool
Metal, Punk, Hardcore
Florida, United States

Overall Impression: "What I Say is Cool" is an exciting release from the vault of Florida based punk rockers, Johnny Void and The Others. With the lineup of Johnny Void (guitar/vox), Michael Blackford (bass), and Jason Burrows (drums), the band recorded this track in January 1996 at L N G Studios in Merrit Island, FL. This track wastes no time in getting down to business, immediately hitting the listener with the full force of distorted guitar, frenetic drumming and a screaming, guttural vocal delivery through the verse, before landing on the more melodic titular hook of "What I say is cool." A quick modulation serves as a bridge, before returning to the main riff and finishing out this brief but wild ride. Punk rock aficionados should be on the lookout for not one, but two musical anthologies from Johnny Void and The Others, released on Rakka Rakka Records.

Strongest Point(s): Great energy, very much in the anarchic spirit of punk, both musically and lyrically. The musicianship is quite good, especially considering the ages of the artists at the time of the recording. Nice contrast between the screaming verse and the sung chorus, I've always appreciated that device in this genre. Clever little bridge, does well to break things up. Finally, I liked the ritard at the end. It adds a feeling of release, gives it a little added drama. Very solid track!

Target Audience Appeal: Fans of Punk Rock, Hardcore Punk, Proto Punk, Thrashcore, Skate Punk, Alt Rock

Artist target suggestions: Minutemen, Circle Jerks, Sex Pistols, Minor Threat, Black Flag, Bad Religion, Suicidal Tendencies, Dead Kennedys, Misfits, Ramones, The Faith, Fugazi, Agent Orange, Bad Brains, Reagan Youth

SONG REVIEW 🎵📝 Total Psychos - I Hit Myself

radioairplay.com independent new music

Total Psychos - I Hit Myself
Rock, Punk, Alternative
Etobicoke, Canada

Overall Impression: Total Psychos deliver a white-knuckled Punk-fueled tale of clumsiness and chaos in their original track, "I Hit Myself"! Classically distorted guitars herald the start of the suffering, forming a raw but restrained foundation for the verse's setup before Total Psychos explode into a bright Punk Rock chorus of unfortunate events as they outline a series of mishaps ranging from facial dislocation to a potential wounding charge in the self-explanatory "I Hit Myslef".

Strongest Point(s): Excellent instrumental work! The tones and techniques employed throughout "I Hit Myself" are rock solid, time-honored, and evocative - capturing the frantic chaos of the lyrics through wild overdrives and bombastic, chugging progressions. Once the song reaches the chorus, the bold brightness of the sound makes a great counterpoint for the unlucky onslaught of violent circumstances, and the electric lead solo serves as a compelling bow on top of the experience! Great sounds!

Target Audience Appeal: "I Hit Myself" nails a sense of humor and musical drive that promise to resonate among fans of Punk Rock in all of its permutations - gleefully wrapping disconcerting lyrical imagery in a cloak of high-octane guitar, drums, and bass to achieve an experience that feels endlessly familiar while indisputably original. For those that dig the vibe, Total Psychos is be a name to keep an eye on and "I Hit Myself" serves as a killer introduction to what creativity is yet to come!

Artist target suggestions: Origami Angel, blink-182, Sincere Engineer, PUP, Mom Jeans., Michael Cera Palin, Worst Party Ever, Spanish Love Songs, Green Day, Sum 41, The Front Bottoms, Hot Mulligan, Touché Amoré, Tigers Jaw, AJJ, Sorority Noise, Modern Baseball, illuminati hotties

SONG REVIEW 🎵📝 Gamma Rage - Scorcher

radioairplay.com independent new music

Gamma Rage - Scorcher
Rock, Metal, Punk
Rhode Island, United States

Overall Impression: Rhode Island based hard rockers Gamma Rage deliver one scorcher of a track, with the aptly named Scorcher! Super heavy distorted guitars lead the charge as singer, Malyssa BellaRosa teases the listener with a tale straight out of the diary of Hunter S. Thompson. With lyrics like "Took too much and now I’m gone - tiny lizards crawling on and on. Scarlett lines all on their backs - feel like I’m having a heart attack", that perfectly reflect the sensation of an oncoming hallucinogenic experience. The music totally matches the chaotic mental experience of someone entering into a heavy drug trip and as the guitars get louder and more wild, Malyssa continues explaining how the trip is getting more and more intense with lines like "Holograms light up the room - dancing on the wall conjuring blooms. You can’t move and you can’t groove and you can’t move". And after every other line, Malyssa continuously seduced the listener to "take another hit". Which as anyone who has experienced a bad trip will tell you, is not a great idea. As the music builds to an over the top finale of raging guitar solos, and as Malyssa screams "I can't believe it's going this way", everything suddenly comes crashing to a halt as Scorcher comes to its conclusion.

Strongest Point(s): Excellent music production. The guitar tones are really raw and in your face. Bordering on Metal, but still in the realm of whiskey-soaked Hard Rock. Malyssa's vocals have a perfect bite and menace to accompany such an intense lyrical message. Love the use of dual guitars as well. It's nice to hear each of them bouncing off each other from the left and right sides of the stereo spectrum.

Target Audience Appeal: For fans of real Hard Rock. The kind that makes you want to tear across the Mojave Desert on a Harley. Also has a lot of potential for Punk, Stoner Rock, Psych Rock, Metal, Alternative, even Classic Rock fans. Suggest hitting up sync agencies for placement in media like films, television, etc.

Artist target suggestions: The Plasmatics, Motörhead, Judas Priest, The Black Label Society, Red Fang, Clutch, Queens of The Stone Age, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Dead Boys, Girlschool, etc.
