With its animated performances and undeniable catchiness, "Very Christmas" is one of those particular pieces of Christmas-inspired songwriting that has both the melody and sense of spirit needed to reach many a listener's hearts. Strongest Point(s): The lyrics certainly manage to capture many of the distinct qualities associated with the festive period, and as a result, manage to instantly conjure up that special Christmas feeling effortlessly, combine this with the animated vocal performances and uptempo rhythm, and those energy levels are well and truly raised in no time. I certainly appreciate the attention to detail that's been applied to the arrangement, both filled with variety and blissfully free-flowing in nature, there are some fantastic elements here that heighten the effectiveness of the writing tenfold. For instance, take the way certain parts of the instrumentation are used to create some form of textural and timbral distinction between the song's various sections, some great examples of this would be how the overdriven guitar is used to contrast with the softer acoustic elements and the way the instrumentation is stripped back just before the chorus to allow for a greater sense of flamboyance to be achieved when it eventually kicks in. The writing, performances, and continually adapting nature of the arrangement are always serving up some new nuggets of interest for the listener, resulting in a hearty rock tune filled with personality. Target Audience Appeal: This is definitely one for the Christmas rock fans and I'm sure it will appease many a Christmas song lover. Joe's weathered baritone is supported here by a minimal ensemble of strummed guitars, bass and shaker, while a gorgeous string arrangement provides vibrant color and expression, conveying both sweetness and sadness on this authentic love song that exposes both the light and the darkness that is inherent in most romantic relationships. The chord changes reflect that dichotomy, moving effortlessly from major to minor and allowing for a compelling melodic structure that should connect with a wide range of listeners. Folk and Americana enthusiasts in particular need to check out josephhosey's "The Devil I Know", available now as a single on all major streaming platforms. Fantastic vibe on this song. it does an outstanding job of echoing the lyrical themes with the music, which is ultimately the goal of any songwriter, but very seldom achieved. Wonderful harmonic progression, very nice use of borrowed chords on the turnarounds. The strings really made this tune come alive for me, great job arranging and I love how they sit in the mix. I liked the sparse percussion element of what sounds like an egg shaker, drums of any sort would've most likely weighed this song down and been difficult to mix, particularly in the low mids. Terrific lyrical content, outstanding prose used to illustrate the dual nature of love. Should resonate strongly with listeners above a certain age. Nice ending as well. Overall, it's a great bit of song craft and a commendable production for a DiY job. Tremendous work on this one! A brutally honest and acutely aware social commentary, this mid tempo track makes the keen observation that "We're all just monkeys with money and guns", set to a mostly acoustic folk/blues based arrangement that serves as an ideal backdrop for Squires' easygoing, natural vocal delivery. Its rootsy sound and down-to-earth character make Raleigh J Squires' "Darwin" an easy recommendation for mainstream country music fans, while the thought provoking, mindful nature of its lyrics will appeal to alt-country and folk audiences as well. Casey Murray - Two Timing Man Country, Country Rock Kerikeri, New Zealand Overall Impression: "Two Timing Man" is an exciting new release from up and coming country music songstress, Casey Murray. Hailing from New Zealand, Miss Murray gives a rousing vocal performance here on this track that features a classic honkytonk sound delivered by a top notch backing band, highlighted by a rollicking boogie woogie piano and superb Chuck Berry-esque guitar. Featuring a wonderful back and forth duet between Murray and a male singing partner, "Two Timing Man" conveys a dialogue that's implied in the title, as she confronts her unfaithful companion at a local saloon. Country music and roots rock fans alike will certainly find a lot to love about "Two Timing Man", and should keep an eye out for rising star Casey Murray. Strongest Point(s): Fantastic production, solid mix. Wonderful bit of song craft, both lyrically and musically. Universal theme, practically everyone has been on one side or the other of the cheating relationship, and can identify with the lyrics. Love the chromatic RnB style intro. Great band, rhythm section is locked in tight. Bass and drums working perfectly in concert, and the piano player is exceptional. The guitar licks add a ton of classic character. Awesome vocal performances by both singers. Very soulful deliveries, and the back and forth is absolutely engaging. Listeners will eat this up. Amazing job all round, by everyone involved.
