Michael William Reynolds - Fickle Wind
Folk
CO, US

Overall Impression: Colorado-based singer/songwriter Michael Williams Reynolds serves up a soul-stirring, atmospheric folk ballad, with his release of "Fickle Wind". This track features a dramatically sparse arrangement, highlighted by meticulous fingerstyle guitar alongside guest artist Jessica Seibert's haunting viola in support of Reynolds' evocative vocals. Minor-keyed melodies feel ancient and pastoral here, while lyrics paint a gothic image of an abandoned home, representing isolation and emotional grief while allowing for deep philosophical reflection and personal lament. Heady themes along with a venerable, almost atavistic sound make Michael William Reynolds' "Fickle Wind" an easy recommendation for any folk music enthusiasts. Look for it now, available as a single on all major music platforms.

Strongest Point(s): Excellent production and a great sounding mix. Gorgeous intro. The room/reverb sounds amazing. Guitar and viola sound great together, love the contrast of the bright metallic string sound with the natural warmth of the viola. Fantastic picking patterns that make good use of open string drones. Incredibly haunting melody, terrific minor mode with a primeval quality to it that's perfect in this context. Awesome vocal performance and production, crystal clear delivery with good vibrato and expression. Lyrics do a terrific job of exploring isolation and loneliness, with icy cold imagery and great placement of the abandoned home as metaphor. Tremendous use of prose to convey a stagnant sense of grief, these lyrics should resonate with older indie and alternative audiences. All in all, this is a tremendous contemporary folk song with an eternal vibe that transcends time and space. Very nice work, all around!
