LD/PocketDog - It Rained Last Night
Folk
VA, US

Overall Impression: Folksinger LD/PocketDog captures the mysterious beauty of a nocturnal summer storm, with his release of "It Rained Last Night". This track blends hypnotic acoustic guitar with haunting melodies and free flowing, stream-of-consciousness lyrics that use imagery and sound alongside metaphor to paint a poetic picture of a dramatic romance, followed by a sudden break-up. LD uses real audio of a thunderstorm to underscore reverb-soaked vocals that convey complicated and contrasting themes, moving from frustration and anger to a wistful heartache, before culminating in a memory of intense, passionate energy. Adult alternative and singer/songwriter fans will appreciate the compelling songwriting and mesmerizing sounds of "It Rained Last Night", from LD/PocketDog.

Strongest Point(s): Solid production, decent mix. Incredible atmosphere, great use of thunderstorm audio/foley to help set the mood. Well placed thunderclaps as well. Fantastic picking pattern in the verses, I really like the chromatic chord changes to get to the chorus. Haunting vocal performance, has a wonderful vulnerability and fragility to it. Absolutely love the major chord ending, gives the impression of the rain letting up and sun coming out. Lyrically, this song really shines. Pure prose that moves through three stages of grief resulting from a breakup, using the backdrop of the storm as a brilliant and apt metaphor for the turmoil and the trouble. Overall, this is an excellent track and a fantastic bit of song craft and collaboration by setting your friend's poetry to music and producing a powerful finished track. Stellar work, all around!
