SONG REVIEW π΅π Jessica Wicken - The Curse
Jessica Wicken - The Curse
Country, Folk Rock
CO, US
Overall Impression: Singer/songwriter Jessica Wicken serves up lighthearted and humorous country-folk, with her upcoming release of "The Curse". This mostly acoustic track takes a playfully exaggerated look at the frustration brought on by a messy purse, elevating it to a comedically supernatural level. Wicken delivers jocular verses in a relaxed half-spoken, half-sung folk style that audiences will find charming and affable, describing her ill-fated handbag with hilarious precision set to a lively two-step beat. "The Curse" should appeal to both country and folk music audiences, thanks to its down-to-earth, rustic sound, along with humorously relatable subject matter.
Strongest Point(s): Decent production and mix. Nice lively vamp. The borrowed Ab makes it stand out it from a common chord progression, gives it an almost Jim Croce "Leroy Brown" quality. Great little reel-style guitar lead, somewhat feels like a fiddle tune. Solid vocal performance, great folksy delivery that audiences should easily connect with. Terrific lyrical content; a relatable theme (particularly for women, although as a man I can certainly sympathize with clutter) and consistently hilarious throughout, with a wonderful fantasy/magic element included in the narrative. Excellent lyrical structure and rhyme scheme as well, with a clear setup/punchline build. All in all, this is a tremendous bit of song craft that should have no problem finding an audience among female folk and country fans. Wonderful work, all around!
Target Audience Appeal: Fans of Country, Folk, Country-Folk, Americana
Artist target suggestions: Christine Lavin, Courtney Barnett, Cheryl Wheeler, Laurie Lewis, Sunny War, Lucy Wainwright Roche, Susan Werner
