Alan Eberlein - I'm as Ugly as Sin
Country
IL, U.S.
Overall Impression: Singer/songwriter Alan Eberlein blends self-deprecating humor with traditional country music, on his release of "I'm as Ugly as Sin". This shuffling mid-tempo track is highlighted by weeping pedal steel and wailing harmonica in support of Eberlein's folksy, down-home vocal performance. His lyrics offer a heartwarming exploration of self-doubt and true love, contrasting the author's comically low self-image with their steadfast adoration and desire for their partner. Its wry, playful themes and authentic honky tonk sound make Alan Eberlein's "I'm as Ugly as Sin" an easy recommendation for country music fans who appreciate witty storytelling along with light-hearted songwriting.
Strongest Point(s): Decent production and mix. Great trad country sound and vibe. Nice shuffle groove. Love the pedal steel, always makes any song better. The harmonica adds a wonderful folk element. Classic country music song structure and melody line. Solid vocal performance, charming delivery style with just a touch of twang. Lyrically is where this track really shines; fantastic message of "beauty is in the eye of the beholder", along with loads of humble and self-critical wit. Great final line, repeated for emphasis. All in all, this is a tremendous bit of song craft that should appeal to any country music fans with a modest sense of humor. Excellent work on this tune!
