Steven B. - In Flight
Jazz, R&B
Maryland, U.S.

Overall Impression: "In Flight" is a light and breezy new release from renowned D.C. metro area saxophonist Steven Bundick, AKA Steven B. Co-written with keyboardist Jonathan Davis, this mid tempo track presents a contemporary smooth jazz sound, with Steven's soulful tenor sax leading a top-notch ensemble highlighted by a crack rhythm section. Percussive electric bass, airy keys and syncopated guitar meld with a crisp and steady backbeat punctuated by dynamic brass, on this tune that also features a guest spot from legendary trumpet player, Tom Browne. Without a shadow of a doubt, Steven B.'s "In Flight" deserves a roster spot on any smooth or contemporary jazz playlist.

Strongest Point(s): Excellent production, solid mix. Love the intro that comes back around later; those close vocal harmonies provide a really interesting texture. Amazing saxophone tone, technique and phrasing. Fantastic groove; the drums and bass are locked tight, and the congas add a ton of color. Nice keyboard choices. Some great guitar work behind the scenes. Outstanding variations in the horn charts and subtle yet effective instrumental changes. Mr. Browne's solos were stellar. I really liked the way you staged the ending, by first fading the rhythm section and leaving the horns to dissolve into that foley (which I'm assuming was a plane taking off). Overall, this is a terrific piece of highly engaging contemporary jazz that should be well received by the jazz community as a whole. Phenomenal work, by everyone involved!

Target Audience Appeal: Fans of Jazz, Contemporary Jazz, Smooth Jazz, Fusion, Crossover Jazz, Jazz-Pop.

Artist target suggestions: David Sanborn, Wayne Shorter, Grover Washington, Jr., Arturo Tappin, Najee, Vincent Ingala, Dave Koz, Tom Scott, Walter Beasley, Steve Cole, Boney James, Kamasi Washington
