Overall Impression: A veteran of the Jazz scene, Duane Benjamin brings years of experience and expertise in the creation of his new Jazz tune All Blues. A masterclass in groove and taste, the opening bass solo in All Blues grabs attention with its energy, tone, and fine intonation. The quick tempo keeps listeners on their toes, but all of the performers find the pocket and control the energy to build a captivating listening experience. A Big Band tune, All Blues features a killer trumpet solo and exquisite vocals. There is never a dull moment and each player brings their "A" game. Lyrically, All Blues pays tribute to Miles Davis and his groundbreaking album Kind Of Blue. Respectful and with a sense of discovery, they explain how we all are continuing down the path laid down by Davis. While All Blues does pay its dues, Duane Benjamin and his band deserve credit for their fine work on this fantastic new Jazz tune.
Strongest Point(s): There are many strong points with All Blues. The players all perform exceptionally well, and the composition itself is endlessly captivating. But what really drives the piece home is how it steeps itself in the history of Jazz and Blues. It adds its own twists and turns, but still honors the legends that created the art form.
Target Audience Appeal: Fans of Contemporary Jazz and Big Band will certainly enjoy All Blues by Duane Benjamin, but even more conservative Jazz fans will appreciate the work that has been done here.
