Oldome - Streets of Brass
Dance/Electronica, Funk, Trip Hop
Toronto, Canada
Overall Impression: Tremendously creative and managing to effortlessly blend together a number of diverse styles together with the utmost of confidence, "Streets of Brass" is a dazzling display of hip-hop-infused rhythms, jazzy brass showcases, and funk injected electronica. Oldome shows great promise as an upcoming artist and producer and having only just over a year of producing experience to his name, "Streets of Brass" is an incredibly strong example of just how far this artist has clearly come in such a short amount of time. Excitingly arranged, very well performed, and highly inventive in regards to its melodic and rhythmic ideas, this is certainly a track that is an absolute joy to get lost in.
Strongest Point(s): "Streets of Brass" is a marvelous example of the power of mixing diverse styles together, elements of jazz, funk, hip-hop, and dance are all present and provide listeners with an abundance of interesting sounds and tonal colors to experience throughout. From the clearly hip-hop-inspired drum track to the jazzy brass melodic ideas that are overlayed on top, there is a certain groove to the track that is both engaging and undeniably exciting, there is even a slight synthwave influence creeping in at 1:26 courtesy of the synth lead sound that's used. There are also some excellent production techniques incorporated throughout which really help to keep the music feeling fresh, take the way the Hammond organ is used in the opening for example, taking on a lo-fi sound and having its pitch subtly manipulated to create a great bit of tension in preparation for when the track fully kicks in at 1:05, this is just one example of how various FX and production tools are used to heighten the effectiveness of the arrangement, and when combined with the strong writing and inspired performances, the results are truly captivating.
Target Audience Appeal: Lovers of Trip-Hop will certainly find "Streets of Brass" to be a fantastic example of what happens when you blend funk, hip-hop, and electronica to great effect.
