Overall Impression: Any great Gospel song should have the magical ability to both uplift and instill a level of peace and hope in a listener, and listening through Martin Palmer's wonderfully endearing tune "Hold On", I can happily say this is certainly one of those very songs. Passionately performed and fantastically arranged, "Hold On" offers listeners an abundance of inspired ideas and creative embellishments throughout its duration, serving up superb vocal performances filled with striking conviction, dazzling instrumental moments, and a powerful feeling of both serenity and inspiration that overwhelms the listener, filling them with a level of positivity that I'm sure we could all do with right now.
Strongest Point(s): If you can leave a song feeling positively charged and invigorated, it's a safe sign that it's accomplished what it set out to do and has successfully achieved its main goal, "Hold On" does this beautifully. The energy in the performances is utterly infectious, and if you are a musician and find yourself wanting to grab the nearest instrument in order to jam along, such as I did, then the song is clearly firing on all cylinders. Powerful vocal performances are paired with the equally compelling sense of musicianship that's found in the accompaniment, and the way each performer seamlessly interacts with one another is an absolute joy to listen to. Whether it'd be the sublime unison lines the guitar and bass conduct, such as at 3:13, or the wonderfully rich texture that gently envelopes the whole arrangement, "Hold On" is an exemplary Gospel track that a broad range of music lovers can appreciate.
