BLACKICE - We're Lovers
Reggae, Hip Hop/Rap, World
California, United States

Overall Impression: Jamaican recording artist Black Ice is a rising star in the reggae world, and his exceptional skill is plainly evident on his single "We're Lovers." This sweet and soulful duet features the equally talented Sophia Brown in a modern take on the lovers rock style of reggae, bringing with it an all inclusive pop sensibility that should transcend cultural and genre boundaries to reach a broad global audience. Bubbling organ, easy skanking piano, and bold dub-style horns play over a tight mid tempo reggae groove that's further augmented by gorgeous background vocals and retro synths, giving "We're Lovers" a huge, full band sound that sets the stage perfectly for Black Ice and Sophia Brown's flirtatious vocal interplay. Black Ice's "We're Lovers" absolutely deserves a spot on any reggae playlist, thanks to impeccable musicianship, exquisite production, and a captivating arrangement that will certainly appeal to listeners across the board.

Strongest Point(s): Outstanding production, excellent mix. Great tonal balance. Stunningly intricate arrangement, lots going on but doesn't feel busy or cluttered at all. Great blend of elements, from the opening drum fill to the little giggles on the the outro. Brass sounds absolutely fantastic. Synths sit well in the mix. Awesome bass line, wonderful motion and a nice warm tone. Love the variation in the drums, especially when they go to that ride pattern. Background vocals are sublime, they add so much depth and color. Brilliant performances by both lead vocalists, there's a great apparent energy and playfulness between them that should help listeners easily connect to the song. Great lyrical content, contextualy perfect. Simply an exceptional track on so many levels, and one that should have huge crossover appeal, thanks to its positive nature and soul/pop sensibility. Phenomenal job, by all involved!
