Center Stage - Lauren L'aimant

Meet Lauren L'aimant - A London based singer/songwriter and producer who’s been making a name for herself by featuring on various artist & producers projects.

Early 2017 saw Lauren collaborate with Icarus on their track ‘Hiding’ which went on to be named ‘Essential New Tune’ by Pete Tong on BBC Radio 1. This has led to Lauren signing to Icarus’s imprint ‘Fly Boy Records’ and is now working on her debut EP set for release later this year. Following this she has been working with the likes of Apres, Felon and My Friend and continues to constantly write music for herself, as well as other rising stars.

Her catchy electronic pop sound has caught the attention of Jango listeners as well as the staff here at RA. Take a listen for yourself here and get to know Lauren a bit better in this latest Center Stage artist feature.

Can you describe your sound in one ramble-on sentence?
I like to think my sound is ‘real’ pop. It’s important to me to be relevant and relatable.

What's your earliest music-related memory growing up?
I remember pretending I was asleep to avoid having a piano lesson, haha.

If you were to cover another band/artist's album, which would you pick and why?
Ooh. Hard question. I think I’d love to do someone like Etta James with a big band. That’d be incredible.

Do you write/compose your own songs? Briefly describe your songwriting process.
I do indeed. Some days I get an idea for a lyric or a melody and I build a song around that, and vice versa, sometimes I produce a song and then write to it.

What was the highlight for you in 2017? Either personally or for your music career?
The biggest highlight of 2017 was performing at Pure London on the catwalk which is a big fashion show. I sung ‘Family’ which was also written for a charity in the UK called ‘The Princes Trust’.

What have you been working on recently? Can you give us a hint for whats to come in 2018?
I’m hoping to have finished my debut EP around summer time, I’m going on tour with a duo called ‘Icarus’ very soon too, and also featuring as a vocalist on a few electronic tracks coming out this year! Exciting times.

What do you like more: Performing live or recording in the studio?
Performing live is very, very nerve wracking but once I’m in the zone it feels amazing. I love producing a song in the studio though. That’s where I feel most happy!

What are some artists/bands that you're into at the moment? Or any particular song you find yourself listening to over and over?
I have always loved electronic music, and I’m finding myself playing a song called ‘Panic Room’ by Camelphat & Au/Ra over and over at the moment. Apart from that, I listen to Icarus, Etta Bond, SG Lewis loads.

Any embarrassing on stage moments you'd like to share? C’mon, don’t be shy.
Haha. Oh gosh. I forgot the words to ‘Simply the best’ by Tina Turner once. Bad times.

What's one thing people should know about you?
People should know that I’m not just a singer / songwriter. I also produce my music. I don’t think women get the recognition they deserve in the music industry, or any industry in fact!

What do you enjoy doing outside of music? Does your hobby rejuvenate your creativity?
Like most people I love to be with my friends and interacting with people. I think that’s definitely needed for inspiration. I love to Netflix & Chill (literally) haha and I also love to cook! I like to go to the gym too.

What do you like the most about Radio Airplay?
I think Radio AirPlay is great for unsigned artists like me. It’s a platform that allows unknowns to show people their music. I’ve discovered some gems on there.
