Overall Impression: New Jersey-based artist Tye B serves up atmospheric chamber jazz with a side of tenderness, on her release of "Consumed (Alternate Mix)." This mesmerizing ballad blends gentle piano with layered strings and metallic percussion, all in support of Tye's delicate and vulnerable vocal performance. Her lyrics use grand celestial imagery to illustrate a boundless, obsessive love, set to haunting melodies and contemporary harmonic ideas laid out over two distinct contrasting movements. Strongest Point(s): Solid production, decent mix. Wonderful atmosphere and ambiance, incredibly dreamlike and ethereal. Excellent composition and arrangement, each section has its own character while remaining cohesive by retaining the lyrical theme and vocal motif. Fantastic harmonic structures that allow for lovely modal melodies. Striking vocal performance with a light and gentle delivery that further adds to the weightlessness of the piece. Elegant and poetic lyrics that use cosmic imagery to transport the listener to the edges of the universe, while at the same time conveying a fairly straightforward love story. Love the vocal that begins around 3:15, that section acts as sort of a bridge, departing from the harmonic structures of the A and B sections. Great job of stacking harmonies to create a swirling choir through that passage. All in all, this is a gorgeous track that should appeal to jazz audiences, particularly those with a taste for the meditative and explorative sounds of spiritual jazz. Very nice work, all around!
