Marcus Magellan the Bonjo Jug Band - 45 Days To Live
Folk
FL, US
Overall Impression: "45 Days to Live" is an exciting upcoming release from Marcus Magellan the Bonjo Jug Band. This track blends elements of vintage folk and blues while exploring the urgent life cycle of the worker bee, resulting in a endlessly charming sound. The dire nature of the lyrics is reflected in this compelling minor-keyed tune and brisk arrangement where banjo and kazoo are met by zesty skiffle rhythms and sturdy upright bass, while at the same time drawing attention to the real world plight of the honeybee. Indie folk audiences in particular will enjoy the earnest delivery, desperate message and unique Americana style of "45 Days to Live", from Marcus Magellan the Bonjo Jug Band.
Strongest Point(s): Terrific production, decent mix. Fantastic old-timey folk sound that blends jug and skiffle elements with contemporary sounds like the organ. Strong melody and minor-keyed folk song structure. Propulsive kinetic energy supplied by the rhythm section; the brushes/washboard combo sounds great with that bass line. Great kazoo work, nice little trill at the end of the phrase (I generally don't get to review much kazoo, so I'm understandably excited). Intimate and inviting vocal delivery style, perfect for folk audiences. Lyrical content does a great job of using the bee metaphor to inspire resilience and encourage listeners to seize the moment, while the hook drives home the urgency and immediacy of their brief lifespans. Overall this is a short but sweet track that mixes a lot of different styles into a charming and cohesive Americana sound, as well as a solid bit of songwriting and figurative expression. Wonderful work, by all involved!
