Joseph F. Persinger - Give My Love to Marie
Folk
IN, US
Overall Impression: Indiana's Joseph F. Persinger has recorded and released his new version of James Talley's Give My Love to Marie. A coal miner's Folk ballad, Give My Love To Marie is a gorgeous and soul-moving tune that pulls at the heartstrings. The original is kept simple - just guitar and voice. This new version, however, has been modernized while still honoring Talley's material. Persinger has given the song a more fleshed instrumentation, and treated listeners with the addition of mandolin, fiddle, and bass to the guitar accompaniment. It puts the song in a new light, brightens up the overall mood, and makes for a very enjoyable listen. Persinger's gravely singing voice wraps around the listener like a warm blanket. He carries the melody with ease and matches Talley's intended character of the song. The mandolin takes a few solos, highlighting the delicate mood that has been set and sending warmth through the air. All in all, this is a terrific version of Give My Love to Marie and is every bit as good as the original, while still sounding fresh.
Strongest Point(s): The new instrumentation does a lot of heavy lifting for the song. It instantly hits you like a ton of bricks, and holds your attention the entire way through. Persinger has also done a magnificent job of keeping a clear vision of the song. He hasn't taken anything too far, and maintains all of the heart that is needed for an effective cover.
Target Audience Appeal: Fans of Folk, Roots, and Country will enjoy Joseph F. Persinger's version of Give My Love to Marie.
Artist target suggestions: Jim Croce, Larry Sparks, Jim & Jesse, Bob Dylan, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, James Taylor, James Talley, Woody Guthrie, Harry Chapin, Allison Kraus, Gordon Lightfoot, Don McClean, Cat Stevens
