Viktor Kurinnyy - Baby Boy
Jazz, Instrumental
Ukraine
Overall Impression: “Baby Boy” is a vibrant and effervescent jazz waltz, from Ukrainian musician and composer Viktor Kurinnyy. This work for piano trio features a briskly swung three-quarter time groove, with nimble drumming and resolute bass holding down the foundation for percolating keyboards and minor-mode folk-inspired melodies. An exciting arrangement is highlighted by an expressive rubato bridge that allows listeners to reset and catch their breath before the final pass. Contemporary jazz aficionados, particularly those with an affinity for piano trios, will appreciate the meticulous composition and fiery performances found in Viktor Kurinnyy’s “Baby Boy”.
Strongest Point(s): Excellent production and a great sounding mix. Nice opening figure that establishes both the rhythm and harmony. Drums and bass sound terrific, killer jazz waltz groove. Melodic content has a terrific “Old World” character to it, either consciously or subconsciously influenced by folk music and culture. I absolutely love the bridge section; does a fantastic job of breaking up the arrangement, and that slowdown really drives the theme home. Solid ending, nice hang. Overall, this is a strong track that matches the intimacy and intensity of some of the greatest classic jazz piano trios throughout history. Very nice work, all around!
