Overall Impression: Philadelphia's Miguel Angel Alvarado delivers a passionate and expressive rendition of Andrea Bocelli's "Cantico". This gorgeous piece of operatic pop first appeared on Bocelli's 1999 album Sogno, and has delighted audiences ever since. Alvarado's version exchanges the symphonic arrangement of the original for a more intimate, yet equally stirring piano accompaniment. Romantic Italian lyrics are brought to life by Alvarado's evocative tenor, dripping with emotion and intensity as his melodic lines ring out overtop complex contemporary harmonic ideas being explored by the keyboardist. Classical crossover and vocal music fans in particular will enjoy Miguel Angel Alvarado's "Cantico", available for streaming on his 2009 album titled Tapestry.
Strongest Point(s): Solid production and a quality recording. Terrific choice of material, this is truly a gorgeous work of classical pop music. Incredibly stirring melodic content, as well as interesting harmonic structures. Eloquent and romantic lyrics. I love the piano arrangement, I actually prefer it to the grandiose and dramatic symphonic score on the original. The piano just feels much more personal and intimate. Outstanding vocal performance, for the most part. Your phrasing and expression is remarkable here, and what really sells the song. Excellent vibrato as well. All in all, this is a lovely rendition of a modern masterpiece that should appeal to longtime fans and first-time listeners alike. Exceptional effort, all around!
