Collo - Not For Us
Rock, Alt Rock, Indie Rock
Melbourne, Australia
Overall Impression: "Not For Us" is an exciting new release from the Australian songwriter/guitarist Collo. Muscular post-grunge riffs and rhythms blend seamlessly with 1980's style melodic rock vocals on this track which features the voice of former American Idol contestant London as she gives a truly powerful performance here, delivering a tale of restricted love. Crunchy guitars, thunderous drums and wide open harmonies define this arrangement that's highlighted by a brilliant, "change of pace" bridge around the 3:30 mark. Collo's "Not For Us" should have broad appeal among rock audiences, thanks to its eclectic blend of influences as well as the stunning musicianship on display. Look for it now, available on all major music streaming platforms.
Strongest Point(s): Outstanding production, solid mix. Fantastic rock energy and vibe. Great intro/outro with the wobbly string bit, serves as a nice framing device and gives the track a lovely modern lo-fi element. Incredible riff, very powerful. Wonderful guitar arrangement and tonal variation. Excellent bass line, nice motion. Drums sound incredible, really slamming. Piano adds nice accents of color. Stellar vocal performance; she really lays into it, showing off great range and strength. Love the high harmonies, vocal layers sound fantastic. Lyrics are remarkably vivid and forlorn, perfect for the genre context. The bridge at 3:30 really makes this track standout to me. Such a nice contrast and divergence. It adds an almost psychedelic rock facet, as it recalls a Pete Townsend or Syd Barrett style interlude with its upwards chromatic movement. Overall, it's a terrific song and a tremendous track that was a joy to review. Great work on this one, by everyone involved.
