Overall Impression: Throwing up a middle finger to the man, Ruiz! is taking a stand with the release of One Rule. This new Alternative Rock tune features a spiraling wash of synths upheld by chugging guitars and a twisting bass line. The vocals seem to appear out of thin air with a taunting, critical tone. They are like a voice in your head that is pulling you in several directions at once. Lyrically, One Rule points out the hypocrisy, narcissism, and corruption of governmental leaders. They create rules they themselves do not follow, and continually rip the life out of humanity. The song's message is striking, and does not hold back. Mirroring the corruption described in the lyrics, a destructive guitar solo dismantles the middle of the tune. It is one of those solos so reminiscent of 90's Alternative Rock and Grunge, it throws the listener back a couple of decades. Overall, One Rule by Ruiz! is a solid Alternative Rock tune that takes a stand and embodies the spirit of what Rock is about.
Strongest Point(s): There is quite a deal of creativity at work in One Rule. The music twists and turns, and keeps the listener engaged with elements of New Wave, Indie, and Alternative Rock. It pushes forward with an unrelenting drive. The lyrics are the most inspiring piece of One Rule. They are unforgiving in their criticism of governmental leaders, and shine a light on some serious flaws in the system. This tune has had enough, and uses a Rock edge to deliver its message.
