Laranah Phipps Ray - Jazz Crimes
Jazz, Funk

Overall Impression: Now I've heard plenty of scat singing in my time but I can wholeheartedly say that this turns things way up to 11 for sure. Originally Written by Joshua Redman, this version of "Jazz Crimes" features the utterly dazzling vocal talents of Laranaha Phipps Ray and virtuosic magic of accomplished trumpeter Arnetta Johnson, "Jazz Crimes" is a truly sensational jazz/funk-fusion extravaganza that is steeped in both style and flair. Featuring mind-blowing technique and fantastical melodic maturity, "Jazz Crimes" is an inspiring piece of songwriting that will leave listeners' jaws dropped and reaching for the nearest instrument to join in on the jam.

Strongest Point(s): Laranah Phipps Ray gives a truly outstanding vocal performance that serves as a spectacular display of impeccable phrasing, astounding dynamic control, and tonal precision. The sheer amount of charisma and character in her voice makes for a thoroughly engaging performance that you can't help but keep your attention firmly transfixed on, pair this with Arnetta Johnson's flawless trumpet passages and you get some deeply intricate melodic interplay between the two that is truly electrifying. Tracks such as these have the power to make a listener want to pick up and learn an instrument and for that, I must tip my hat to its undoubted effectiveness as a brilliant jazz-funk endeavor.

Target Audience Appeal: Lovers of jazz-fusion will find "Jazz Crimes" to be a thoroughly enjoyable listening experience.
