The FOG Trio - Uyatu
Classical, Instrumental, New Age
New York, United States

Overall Impression: Delicately crafting a rich musical atmosphere from just a handful of instruments, The FOG Cuartet's most recent original composition, "Uyatu" takes listeners on a brief and blissful instrumental journey through a lush and organic soundscape - captivating hearts and minds with mesmerizing melodic movement and emotionally resonant harmony!

Strongest Point(s): How difficult it is to summarize the strengths of something so sublime! There's very much working together in "Uyatu" to make it as immersive and impressive as it is, from the artistic expression in the composition to the fullness of sound achieved by the unusual and incredibly complimentary collection of instruments that comprise The FOG Cuartet. Throughout the piece, the quartet's four instruments take on different configurations that result in vastly different textures - the opening melodic call-and-response in Flute and Oboe, for example, feeling hopeful as they are but finding new depth and meaning once grounded in the pensive arpeggiations on Classical Guitar and the deep well of emotion pouring from the bowed Cello! Further into the experience, at 1:46, the listener is treated to a brief duet between Flute and Cello - quickly transforming into a trio of Guitar, Cello, and Oboe before the Flute replaces the Guitar for several bars of what can only be described as visceral longing so that once the Guitar re-enters, the listener is whisked away into yet another musical space! The only sound not performed by the four namesake instruments in "Uyatu" belongs to subtle synthetic strings - which are so tastefully applied, they don't distract, but only serve to bolster the experience. Each combination of voices resonates with unique energy, and the breadth of emotional expression achieved by the piece's well-wrought melodies in relation to these textural choices produces a listening experience with truly stunning and wonderfully cathartic qualities!

Target Audience Appeal: Fans of Classical quartets and virtuosic playing will find much to enjoy in "Uyatu", though the innovative sound and style at work in The FOG Cuartet stand to leave a lasting impression on any who listen in! For the journey contained in the all-too-short three and a half minutes of "Uyatu", the experience should find favor with fans of cinematic and interactive scoring as well - boasting timelessly charming melodies and evoking lovely comparisons to renowned composers and artists across genres and forms. Really lovely work! - Jon W.
