Jean Hilbert - Piano At Midnight
Jazz, New Age, Piano Instrumental
Iowa, United States
Overall Impression: American composer Jean Hilbert's "Piano At Midnight" brings with it a broad range of moods and colors; at times hopeful and yet at other moments carrying with it an air of anxiety and existential longing. Composed in the style of a classical nocturne in g minor, this piece uses broken and arpeggiated diminished chords scattered throughout to create palpable instances of tension that ultimately find resolution and release in its relative Bb major. Melancholy and introspective, Jean Hilbert's "Piano At Midnight" should have little problem finding an audience among classical music fans, especially those seeking an inspirational and reflective listening experience. Strongest Point(s): Nice production, good tonal balance. Excellent playing, light touch on the keys and wonderful musicality. Fantastic composition, the theme is plainly stated in the opening and then creatively varied and expanded upon in the middle section. The passage at 3:30 especially caught my ear, I loved the octave doubling you employed there. Great harmonic push and pull, throughout the entire piece. Sensational work here, and an outstanding final product.
