The Great Stupidity - The Steps of Fate
Alternative, Alt. Rock, Folk Indie, Pop
Maryland, United States

Overall Impression: Following the central figure of The Great Stupidity, the blacksmith's son, "The Steps of Fate" illuminate the character's perception of dutiful fulfilment as they recover the toenail of a saint in order to cure a plague known as The Mortality. Somber sounds of organ and gently strummed guitar grant the tune a sense of piousness and purity - highlighted by simple bells for added sincerity and sweetness!

Strongest Point(s): Here, the instrumentation grants the monologue a sense of righteous confidence, or duty-bound delivery that fully endears the character and embraces the silliness of the situation. The use of organ and glockenspiel really help to give "The Steps of Fate" a religious seriousness in spite of the delicate and playful applications - drawing listeners into an empathetic space before the lyrics even fully register.

Target Audience Appeal: With subtle organ and sweet vocal inflections, "The Steps of Fate" registers among the broader canon of Indie Folk - calling to mind the sounds of artists like Sylvan Esso and Cat Power rather than the more playful Anti-Folk jangle of other tracks contained in The Great Stupidity. Fans of spacious and reflective sounds will love what "The Steps of Fate" delivers, while those invested in the narrative will find themselves eagerly awaiting what's in store for the blacksmith's son. - Jon W.

Artist target suggestions: Cat Power, Sylvan Esso, Sharon Van Etten, Andrew Bird, Perfume Genius, Yo La Tengo, Mazzy Star, Kevin Morby, Angel Olsen, Cass McCombs, Steve Gunn, Fiona Apple, Laura Marling, Nick Drake, Broken Social Scene, Big Thief, Sleater-Kinney, Karen Dalton, Neko Case, Warpaint, Aldous Harding
