Now Defunkt - Tumbleweed Angels
Alternative/Alt. Rock, Christian
Washington, United States
Overall Impression: Every now and again, you come across a track that transcends typical genre barriers to create something truly unique sounding and refreshingly bold in its execution, to me, this is one such track. Every element of "Tumbleweed Angels" has a wonderful amount of bite to it, from the attitude-filled lyrics and vocal performances to the ultra-melodic guitar riffs and hard-hitting synth, Now Defunkt serves up an absolute monster of a song that is unapologetically daring, tremendously adventurous, and brilliantly audacious, brilliant work!
Strongest Point(s): Where to begin?! Let's begin with the performances, confident and assured, each performance does a stellar job of bringing the tracks many vivid ideas to life, the lead vocals have a great quirkiness to them and fit with the general aesthetic of the track perfectly, this coupled with the interesting and thought-provoking lyrics make for a strong combination. Whilst the instrumentation sticks to the standard, guitar, bass, and drums formula of most rock-orientated genres, there are some interesting inclusions that help give the arrangement a unique sense of character, particularly the addition of synth which is used to strengthen the driving force of the track alongside the drums as well as provide interesting sound design elements throughout. The harmony in the backing vocals first heard at 0:50 and at later points throughout the song, sound killer, and the fact that it's coupled with the guitar also playing the same melodic line makes for a great repeating motif that helps create a great sense of cohesiveness throughout.
Target Audience Appeal: It's hard to pinpoint a specific genre for this particular song, and that's certainly a compliment! There are many interesting elements within the track that hint at a number of genres, but this most closely fits within the alt. rock genre and fans of the style will have a lot to take away from this track.
Artist target suggestions: 24-7 Spyz, Frank Zappa, Soft Machine, King Crimson, Green Jelly, Prong, Primus, Les Claypool, Prophets Of Rage, Muse, Beastie Boys, Faith No More, Living Colour
