Doc E.C. - What Have I Done To You
R&B, Soul, Pop
Florida, United States
Overall Impression: "What Have I Done To You?" is the funky new release from veteran recording artist Doc E.C. The Native Texan wears his heart, as well as his musical influences, right on his sleeve. This track harkens back to the retro funk and soul sound that dominated the RnB scene in the 1980s and 90s, and features Doc E.C.'s mellifluous baritone vocals, as well as a synth and horn laden arrangement that's anchored by a rock solid funk rhythm section. "What Have I Done To You?" finds Doc being ghosted by a former lover, and him asking what he had done to deserve being cut off without so much as an explanation. Fans of classic RnB, funk, and soul should all be drawn to Doc E.C.'s authentic and emotional style, making "What Have I Done To You?" an easy recommendation for any enthusiasts of said genres.
Strongest Point(s): Solid production, good tonal balance to the mix. Nice groove, just the right amount of swing. Rhythm section is locked in the pocket, and front and center in the mix. There's a touch of 80s/90s Philadelphia soul, thanks to the synth strings and the horn hits. Excellent vocal performance, both in the lead and the backing parts. Outstanding arrangement, plenty of variation thanks to the distinct sections, such as the intro, separate choruses, and the lovely bridge. Lyrical content is spot on for the genre, and easily relatable, as most people have been either "ghosted" or been the ghost at one point or another in a a relationship. Great song, great sound, and a great job from top to bottom.
Target Audience Appeal: Fans of RnB, Funk, Soul, Pop Soul, Neo Soul, Urban Contemporary, Classic 80s and 90s RnB
