Overall Impression: Asylum Seeker is a new rock tune by U.K. based artist Anton Paul. Opening with a cool piano groove and splashy percussion, Asylum Seeker has an atmospheric vibe that builds in intensity until listeners find themselves cruising at altitude. In a contrast to the atmospheric mood created by the instruments, the lyrics paint the bleak picture of being stuck, bound in a bubble, or being locked down. Proclaiming that this kind of life is not life, the narrator turns to his vices, but also balances out the darkness with hopeful dreams of second chances, having places to go and people to see. Painfully relatable during the current pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, the lyrics can serve as a catharsis for those of us stuck inside. Anton Paul's raspy voice is reminiscent of Johnny Cash and adds a deep intensity during the verses but is noticeably uplifting during the chorus.
