J Doug Project - Red Light Green Light
Christian/Gospel, Gospel
Colorado, United States
Overall Impression: This is an incredibly adventurous piece of songwriting by the J Doug Project, mixing gospel-inspired funk with a plethora of interesting melodic ideas, "Red Light, Green Light" is a catchy upbeat tune that has great style and flair.
Strongest Point(s): The different mix of genres here is great, mixing Funk, Gospel, and elements of Soul really creates a fun blend of styles that keeps the listener invested throughout the duration of the song. The instrumentation fits the overall tone of the song perfectly, the strummed guitar (with wah effect) and Rhodes piano instantly solidify a strong funk sound, which is strengthened greatly by the chunky bass and brass section, whilst the lyrical theme conveys Gospel elements, all this is kept together by an upbeat drumbeat that keeps things moving nicely. The melodic content on display is both rich and contrasting, providing great variation throughout, and is arranged in such a manner that really helps keep the flow of the song feeling natural and smooth.
Target Audience Appeal: This certainly feels best suited for classic Funk and Christian-inspired genres and will appeal to fans of these genres the most no doubt, therefore these should be the main areas to definitely focus on for this particular track.
Artist target suggestions: David Crowder Band, The Meters, Bill Withers, Eric Burdon, Fishbone, Avalon, Marvin Sapp, Al Green, Isaac Hayes, Curtis Mayfield, The Staple Singers, Wilson Pickett, Bobby Womack, Graham Central Station
