Jean Laughlin - Smile
Jazz, Broadway, Cabaret
Illinois, United States
Overall Impression: Offering up a positive message and a glimmer of hope in these most trying of times, veteran jazz singer Jean Laughlin gives us this big band number, simply entitled "Smile." Originally included on her 2012 album, Miracle of Life, "Smile" feels particularly pertinent during the current pandemic, with its theme of resolute optimism, and not taking life's little blessings for granted. A dynamic big band arrangement provides ample support for Laughlin's silky smooth vocals, allowing her to fully demonstrate her incredible range and capabilities. Spectacular musicianship and a sunny disposition make Jean Laughlin's "Smile" an easy recommendation for any and all jazz aficianados.
Strongest Point(s): Outstanding production, great vocal performance. Some beautiful imagery there in the lyrics, especially in phrases like "I'm gonna drink up the beauty of a pastel sunrise", and "feast my weary eyes on a luscious sunset." Just some great prose. Also, very apropos to the current pandemic situation, as you had astutely noted. Love the arrangement, especially the tempo changes. Horns provide excellent punctuation, and the rhythm section really swings. Some really nice piano comping, as well. Great bit of song craft, great arrangement, great performance. Simply an amazing track!
