Strongest Point(s): There are many strong points in Gypsy Sister: the lyrics which takes us on a journey to the past, in her coming of age story with the use of language, such as using the word, "kingdom" which is an artistic choice that make this song authentic and true to the 70s feel. Next, Leslea's haunting voice sounds at once classical and new - also a true gem, immediately evoking the spirit, talent and range of Karen Carpenter, Carly Simon, as well as current sensation Weyes Blood. There's also the melody and slow tempo, which stays with the listener and even get stuck in one's head, because it never really changes much.
Areas of Improvement: I think this song is great as is, with no need to change anything. However, adding a small extra layer of something experimental or unusual could be interesting. A consideration would be the use of an organ.
Target Audience Appeal: This song will easily appeal to two major demographics. First, those who adore female singer songwriters of the past such as Carly Simon, Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush, Stevie Nicks, and Carole King. Second, Gypsy Style could easily be added to a playlist that includes Julia Holter and Weyes Blood. I think that creativity is needed to promote this ode to the past. I could easily see this song in a film or series soundtrack (like the new L Word), or playing in hip coffee shop. There's a major west coast vibe in the style as well.
Artist target suggestions: Carly Simon, Joni Mitchell, Tracy Chapman, Carol King, Joan Armatrading, Kate Bush, Tori Amos, Weyes Blood, Julia Holter, Marianne Faithful, Judi Collins, Paul Simon, Nick Drake.
