Artist Spotlight ★ Billie B

Her name is Olivia Christina Ciaramella Bergström, known professionally as BILLIE B. I'm a French-Swedish singer and songwriter born in Grenoble South-Eastern France. In 2017, I was discovered by the Swedish Label "Komp Music" and started working with record producer & songwriter, K-PROD (Khosro Sharifi). My debut single, “Until We Die”, was released in 2019. Naivety and melancholia are key leads through my creative process. My musical preference is pop, with the influences of electronic and hip-hop/r&b.

Billie B's "Until We Die" was a recent Radio Airplay song contest winner and can be heard playing to thousands of listeners per day in Jango Radio's Top 100

Can you describe Billie B's sound in one ramble-on sentence?

Airy deaf sound with big space, passionate and emotional.

What's your earliest music-related memory growing up?

I grew up in a punk rock and electro music environment in the tattoo shop of my stepfather where I spent all my days. I loved the Ramones, David Bowie, and Laurent Garnier. My first love was Billy Idol! At 12, I started to listen to the French singer and songwriter Daniel Balavoine. I connected with his lyrics, which was full of sadness, revolt, despair, pain, and hope. It influenced my vision of the world.

If you were to cover another band/artist's album, which would you pick and why?

I think I would pick Beauty Behind The Madness. That is how I discovered The Weeknd. I connected directly with his world and the sound he uses is exactly what inspires me.

Do you write/compose your own songs? Briefly describe your songwriting process. How did "Until We Die" come about?

When I have a new melody popping into my head, I usually record it on my phone. That is the funny thing with inspiration, you can't decide when it’s coming. For “Until We Die,” I had the two first sentences “How you think its gonna end, you and me we are the same.” You can hear on the original recording that I was doing the dishes at the restaurant when I had this idea. After that everything became real when I went to the studio and showed it to K-PROD. He just went to his piano and composed the melody. It was like he was in my head; it was magical. He gave me the microphone and we wrote the song the same day.

Does anything, in particular, inspire you to write? What gets your creative juices flowing?

I write about the things that I can't talk about; the past, and emotions that I have, that I need to get out. It’s like another language. I go deep into my world. But the most inspiring moments is when KPROD plays the piano or when he just picks a cool dark sound. For me, the magic happens when you blend your world with the world of someone else and create something unique.

What has been a highlight for you in the past year?  (Either personally or for your music career.)

My first song came out and I can share it with people. Finally, they get to see my work.

What do you like more: Performing live or recording in the studio?

Those are two very different experiences. In the studio, you have to be super focused, you are alone with yourself. Live, you have the energy of the people in the room. You give something and you get something, you connect.

What are some artists/bands that you're into at the moment? Or any particular song you find yourself listening to over and over?

Billie Eilish! Such a prodigy for me. She is the future of Pop! #teambillie

Any embarrassing on stage/in studio moments you'd like to share? C’mon, don’t be shy.

The day that a famous Swedish producer came in the studio to listen to my songs and I was so tired that I just fell asleep on the sofa, I don't think I impressed him by that, haha…

What's one thing people should know about you?

I’m gonna make it.

What do you enjoy doing outside of making music? Does your hobby rejuvenate your creativity?

Eat! More seriously I am a social animal. I love to meet people, going out, go to concerts. Art in all its aspects is something that feeds my soul, books, painting, cinema, theater, etc… I am a curious kind of person that needs to understand everything. But I also need some time alone to create and connect with myself. Doing sport is also a need, also love dance and boxing.

If you had one message to give to your fans, what would it be?

Be you, be pure, be naive and don't let anyone change you!

What's next? Can you give us a hint for what's to come the remainder of 2019?

I will try to get my first three songs ready asap, so I can perform them live!

Artist Spotlight ★ MAXO

Hailing from Canberra, Australia, MAXO is taking the music world by storm. After releasing his first single 'Won't Let You Go' in 2015 MAXO began scoring regular gigs around the east coast of Australia and performing in front of 10k+ crowds! His 2nd single 'Lost & Found' took off on the TripleJ Unearthed Charts making it to #1 on the Pop charts and #8 Overall. After the success, MAXO was quick to release 'Meant To Be', which made it to #7 on the iTunes singer/songwriter charts opening weekend. MAXO followed the momentum of the Top 10 releases with his smash hit ‘Live in the Moment’ accompanied by a massive headlining tour in 2017. ‘Live in the Moment’ introduced a more upbeat side of MAXO with the same ‘catchy as’ lyrics fans had come to expect. In September of 2017 MAXO released his 2nd single of the year 'Without You'. The impressive year ended with a 10 show North American Tour, 8 of which were sponsored by the extremely selective ‘Live at Aloft’ tour series. 2018 was another big one for the charismatic singer/songwriter after releasing his single ‘Never Ever’ which led to another US headline tour and many festivals throughout Australia. MAXO has hit the ground running in 2019 with the release of his newest single ‘Light It Up’ which has charted on iTunes Australia and has been well received both Nationally and Internationally.
1.Can you describe your sound in one ramble-on sentence?

It would have to be a pop, folk, soft rock, singer-songwriter sound, mainly feel good, inspiring music similar to a mix of Artists such as The Script, Matchbox Twenty, Coldplay, Mumford & Sons and Ed Sheeran.

2. What's your earliest music-related memory growing up?

My earliest music-related memory would have to be when I was in pre-school dancing on the couch, doing the moves to Grease Lightning haha

3. If you were to cover another band/artist's album, which would you pick and why?

Ooo, this one’s a tough one! But probably The Maine’s ‘Can’t Stop Won’t Stop’ , I grew up listening to them and there’s not one song on it I don’t like.

4. Do you write/compose your own songs? Briefly describe your songwriting process.

Yeah I write all my own songs, I don’t really have a process when they come, they come. But a lot of the time I’ll find a pattern I like on the guitar and I’ll mumble along to it and find that one hook line that sticks, then will build a song around it.

5. Does anything in particular inspire you to write? What get's your creative juices flowing?

Just life, and moments in life also a great feel good film and other music.

6. What has been a highlight for you in the past year?  (Either personally or for your music career.)

A few songs starting to get picked up has been one of the big ones, starting to get the feeling as a stayer in the music industry.

7. What's next? Can you give us a hint for what's to come for remainder of 2019?

New music, new shows and potentially a multi-continental tour on the cards.

8. What do you like more: Performing live or recording in the studio?

I do LOVE both! But there’s no greater feeling in the world than performing on stage!

9. What are some artists/bands that you're into at the moment? Or any particular song you find yourself listening to over and over?

Ash Gale’s ‘Sing My Way’ has been on repeat lately. I’ve been recording with him down in Adelaide a bit recently and it’s definitely an anthem to get you pumped for the long drive haha.

10. Any embarrassing on stage moments you'd like to share? C’mon, don’t be shy.

I’m actually disappointed I haven’t had too many embarrassing moments so far! But I recently played a festival and someone yelled out ‘your fly is undone’ and It was, but wasn’t to embarrassed as it does come undone a lot on the skinny jeans haha

11. What do you enjoy doing outside of music? Does your hobby rejuvenate your creativity?

Lately I haven’t been doing too much outside of music, but I do love to watch movies, I get great inspiration from good films.

12. What's one thing people should know about you?

I never thought I’d end up being a Musical Artist, I sort of just fell into it and the passion grew. I actually have a degree in Mechatronics Engineering which is what I set off to do after school.

13. If you had one message to give to your fans, what would it be?

THANK YOU!!! This industry is actually the hardest to crack in the world, it means so much to me every like, share, comment, stream, purchase, attendance, clap, high-five, fist bump, everything which helps me on my way. You guys are why I’m here! Thank you so so much!

Artist Spotlight ★ Righteous Hillbillies ★ Relix Magazine Grand Prize Winner!

The band Righteous Hillbillies formed in 2007. The lineup of Righteous Hillbillies consists of Brent James, a singer and songwriter bringing together such seemingly disparate elements as hard rock, country, with rhythm and blues to form an unforgettable style. Also keeping the rhythm on guitar, James is a charismatic but commanding front man, steering the Southern Rock ship to conquer new territory at every concert. By his side is Nick Normando, a prodigy and lead guitarist who received his baptism in blood while growing up playing the blues. Righteous Hillbillies have now cut the leash, and Normando is free to run with the pack, bringing all his ferocious power and unpredictable virtuosity to the stage and studio. Jeff Bella pours the foundation on the bass, knowing when to inject color and character into the music, behind Bella is Barret Harvey – a thunderous powerhouse whose drumming ability is steady as a pulse, but equally dynamic. Trained in rock ‘n’ roll and jazz, Harvey adds a unique ingredient to the Hillbillies tonic. Elevating the rhythm of Righteous Hillbillies with a tone of gospel is Chris Bartley, whose keyboards and organ give every song a soulful texture on top the jagged edge of rock ‘n’ roll.
Overall, the band has released five full albums of original material, consisting of traditional Southern rock, Americana blues, R&B, Bluegrass, name it. The Righteous Hillbillies have recorded, mixed and mastered two albums at the world-renowned Fame Studio’s in Muscle Shoal’s Alabama. They have worked with Grammy award winning producers, shared the stage with the likes of Bad Company, Charlie Daniel’s, Marshall Tucker Band, Robert Randolph, Georgia Satellites...and many more.

1. Can you describe your sound in one ramble-on sentence?

The Righteous Hillbillies are an axe shredding, ace dealing, foot stompin’, Southern rock, high-powered Americana, boogie blues band that plays with talent and passion baptized in the blood of Lynyrd Skynyrd, AC/DC, ZZ Top, and the Black Crowes while still managing to create an original and independent style.
2. What's your earliest music-related memory growing up?

Probably at the age of ten and seeing a Kiss video for the first time. The power of the music along with the theatrics of fire rock n’ roll and Gene spitting up blood made me want to be a rock star.

3. If you were to cover another band/artist's album, which would you pick and why?

Tom Pettys Wildflowers, I think it’s the best record Tom did. Every song is great and it covers a wide range of style from folk, country and rock n’ roll, all the styles I love.

4. Do you write/compose your own songs? Briefly describe your songwriting process.

Yes, I’ve been writing ever since I could play chords, some people start to learn other peoples music but I didn’t really have any interest in that, I felt like I had something to say so I just started writing songs as soon as I could switch chords from G to C to D. My process is always different, I get inspired from lines in movies and I jot some things down, or I’m playing guitar and discover a cool riff or a chord pattern I like, I hit record on my phone and save it and I may not listen back for a month. Some tunes I brainstorm lyrics on my laptop and then go back to them. I very rarely ever write a song in its entirety from the get-go. I think going back gives me a fresh perspective to see if I’ve got something good or not.

5. Does anything in particular inspire you to write? What get's your creative juices flowing?

Movies are a big inspiration for me and listening in on conversations. I’m kinda lazy when it comes to writing and I procrastinate a lot, so working with a collaborator here and there forces me to get off my ass.

6. What has been a highlight for you in the past year? (Either personally or for your music career.)

Winning Grand Prize for Relix Magazine for a song I wrote for our last album, “bound to change”. I’m not much for contests because I don't think you can label art or music that way but its nice to be recognized. That song is a perfect example of my write something and forget about it style, lol. When writing for our latest record “Playing With Fire” I went through my recorder to listen for ideas that I had when I came across a complete verse and chorus of Bound to Change that I don’t ever remember doing and there it was. I was pleasantly surprised and finished to song that day and took it to rehearsal with the band.

7. What 's next? Can you give us a hint for whats to come for remainder of 2019?

To keep on plugging along, we play a lot of shows. I would like to work on a new record but we will see how long I proc

8. What do you like more: Performing live or recording in the studio?

I like both, they are two completely different things. Live you get the feedback and the energy from the crowd. In the studio it’s a more controlled environment, you’re working on creating something special, trying to capture a moment and you have endless tries to get one. Live you’ve got one shot.

9. What are some artists/bands that you're into at the moment? Or any particular song you find yourself listening to over and over?

When I’m not playing I listen to a lot more mellow music, more folky roots stuff like Gillian Welch, Tyler Childs, Isbell and Prine. I collect vinyl records and my wife I hang out at our bar downstairs, have some drinks, spin vinyl, relax and hang out with each other. There isn't a particular song that I’m hooked on right now.

10. Any embarrassing on stage moments you'd like to share? C’mon, don’t be shy.

Hmmmm, I don’t think I have one personally but our drummer ate a bunch of pickled eggs before a gig once, if that’s any indication of where this may be going.

11. What do you enjoy doing outside of music? Does your hobby rejuvenate your creativity?

I enjoy riding my motorcycle with myself and friends. It clears my mind from the daily grind and allows me to see things more clearly.

12. What's one thing people should know about you?

I don’t know really, I’m more of a private person when it comes to my personal life. I don’t air my dirty laundry in public or on social media...I don’t think its anybody’s business where I’m at or what I’m eating at any given time. I don’t boast about anything or search for attention, I think trust is something thats earned and you can’t buy brotherhood. I guess, if I had one thing I wanted people to know is that if I call you bro, I mean it, I consider you a friend and I’m very loyal. It’s a pet peeve of mine when someone calls me bro and they don’t even know me...It’s a term thrown around to loosely these days.

13. If you had one message to give to your fans, what would it be?

Keep supporting ORIGINAL LOCAL MUSIC wherever you live. Cover music is fine for a nite out, but keep an open mind and ears to what your local musicians are doing and saying and support them. There’s a lot of great music out there in the underground, don’t just listen to what the mainstream radio programmers are cramming down your throat, you’ll discover so many great original artists that will stir your soul.
