Center Stage - Tyller Fischer

Meet Tyller Fischer - An 18 year old up-and-coming singer/songwriter from Melbourne, with a distinctly unique sound that comes straight from her heart and experiences.

Her song Rebel was also one of the Top 10 Winners in Radio Airplay's recent Summer Song Contest.

Get to know this promising young artist for yourself in our latest Q&A feature:

Can you describe your sound in one ramble-on sentence?
Probably something like alternative pop/folk, with catchy hooks and pretty melodic lines.

What’s your earliest music-related memory growing up?
Singing twinkle twinkle little star when I was about two or three in front of my mum and all her colleagues at their work party in which they were having a karaoke night. Apparently I was hogging the stage and they wanted me to get off so they could have a turn, but I just wanted to keep singing.

If you were to cover an band/artist’s album, which would you pick and why?
If I didn't have a band to help me out it would be Billie Eilish ‘dont smile at me’ because I love her and love to dance around to her songs. If I did have the help of a band, however, I would choose either Ocean Alley (an Australian band) or Kaleo (an Icelandic band) as these are the albums I am constantly listening to and jamming out to in the car.

Do you write/compose your own songs? Briefly describe your songwriting process.
Yeah I write my own songs. It generally starts with and idea or a point I need to make, or an emotion I’m feeling that I want to make sense of. Then I start to write about whatever my topic is, and the music comes after that.

What was the highlight for you in 2017? Either personally or for your music career?
Either when I won the ASA - Australian Songwriters Association award for Best Contemporary Pop/Dance Song, or when I became ambassador for Listen Up Music, a not-for-profit organisation that raises funds for mental health charities.

What have you been working on recently? Can you give us a hint for what’s to come in 2018?
A very different sound to what you’ve heard is what’s yet to come. That more alternative pop/folk thing I was telling you about earlier which is much more raw and real than my previous work.

What do you like more: performing live or recording in the studio?
Definitely live! It’s so much more fun being able to dance around and feed off a crowd, and it’s so much easier to feel what you’re singing when you’re performing it.

What are some artists/bands that you're into at the moment? Or any particular song you find yourself listening to over and over?
I listen to so many different artists and bands, but my top picks at the moment would be Billie Eilish, Ocean Alley, Kaleo, PLGRMS, Milky Chance and Ben Howard.

Any embarrassing on stage moment you’d like to share? C’mon, don’t be shy.
I can’t say that I’ve really had any super embarrassing moments on stage - I’ve never fallen over or anything (let’s not jinx that).

What’s one thing people should know about you?
I don’t want to make music for the sake of making music. I want it to mean something and I want it to make an impact on the world. I want to make people’s lives better.

What do you enjoy doing outside of music? Does your hobby rejuvenate your creativity?
Yeah so I love doing sports and exercise, I love reading, and I’m a bit of health freak so I love to study nutrition in my spare time. All of these things make my brain happy which is super important for creativity.

What do you like most about Radio Airplay?
I love that it gives my music a chance to be heard, and more than that, it gives it a chance to be heard worldwide.
