Center Stage - Casey Pechet

bw.jpg

Meet our new Center Stage artist, Casey Pechet!

Born in 1960 in Edmonton, Canada and raised on 60’s pop and rock; largely provided by my brother eight years my senior. I still remember him putting on Sgt. Pepper's on a warm summer night in 1967 – he started with Lovely Rita and that was that – I knew what I wanted to do.

By 2010, I found I was no longer bound to a specific style or genre and felt no need to ‘compete’ or prove anything. It was wonderfully liberating. After almost four decades of ‘professional’ efforts I finally gave way to letting anything and everything flow irrespective of genre and popularity. It was only then when my music finally took on a life of its own and became art.

These days I play all the instruments both real and synthesized and mix and produce.
I realize it's a cliché to say it but if I had to summarize my life’s journey and learning it would be this: Let go.

Describe your sound in one ramble-on sentence..
70s fusion, prog, art and ambient music getting together at the Holiday Inn for open mic night.

What inspires you to make music?
The need to escape to an imaginary and abstract universe where some of the usual laws do not apply.

What aspect of making music excites you the most right now?
I love having technology which enables me to experiment with and distill ideas using tools and technologies unimagined thirty years ago.

What are the biggest challenges you face as a musician?
My challenges are self-imposed – can I do better as a musician?
What's one of your all-time favorite recordings?
Terje Rypdal ‘Waves’

Name three people who have influenced your music, and tell us why- Living or dead.
Bill Evans –Preternatural ability to improvise patterns as well as melodies, gorgeous touch and technique, peerless.

John Abercrombie -Original, sensual and atmospheric player – integrates deeply into the ensemble and soars above it when called upon without pretense.
Keith Emerson –Rock meets next-level technique. Defined rock keyboards for a decade and introduced synths to a generation.

Do you have any recent or upcoming projects you'd like to share with us? Tell us about it.
My work is ongoing and happens when it happens. I stall out and get back into a groove. I do not set schedules as my process fails when I try to meet specific goals. After forty years of trying to fight with creative control it I have given over to embracing the moments when inspiration comes.

What is your ideal or target audience?
The world is so big and tastes so broad that I believe the idea of ‘target audience’ belongs to a different era. Music flows over everyone and, at some level, influences feelings for better or worse.

Do you write/compose your own songs? Briefly describe your songwriting process.
I compose my own tracks which can take from a day to never. For every song that makes it to the finish line there are five or six which are abandoned due to any number of factors ranging from no groove or vibe to no story development. I have no specific process aside from setting up my studio to record and improvising. Most of the time nothing interesting happens but occasionally a groove or idea will emerge that is worth working on. If the track is lyrical then words and ideas may start to percolate and converge. If not, I think about the track in terms of synths and guitars carrying melodies.

What do you like the most about Radio Airplay?
I like that there is forum which permits me to actually reach listeners who share my tastes and aesthetic where my music will not sink below the signal to noise ratio.

Center Stage Artist - Erick Macek

We're excited to present our latest multitalented Center Stage artist, Erick Macek.

Over the past year, songs from Macek’s prior album, Colors May Change, have received a tremendous amount of music placement. CBS used his work in the series Life Unexpected, Melrose Place and 90210. The feature film The Opposite Sex, which stars Mena Suvari and Geoff Stults, used Long, Long, Time for the closing credits.

Recently, Erick has been co-writing with artists like James Ragan and Robbie Boyd.

Erick's latest self-titled EP was fully crowd-sourced and is filled with guest appearances. Mikal Blue, who holds a Grammy for his work with Jason Mraz, produced, mixed and engineered the project.

Describe your sound in one ramble-on sentence
My sound is a culmination of pop, blues and soul with original, heartfelt lyrics. My songs are a timeline of personal material that relates to everyday trials of life. A few people  often compare me to Jason Mraz, Jack Johnson, James Taylor, and Paul Simon.

What inspires you to make music?
Life. Through personal growth and self-exploration, I find common ground with others in creating music. There is a genuine notion to relate to others through personal experience. I'm constantly inspired by other people's stories, my experiences and by life in general.

What aspect of making music excites you the most right now?
Growing up. I've experienced change in myself, and with that my writing has changed. I have gotten back to enjoying the process of making music, instead of looking all around trying to mimic others. I feel as though your true sound comes from the failure of trying to be like those who have influenced you.

What are the biggest challenges you face as a musician?
The financial burden and ever-changing music industry. I think with today's technology there are more ways of creating and getting the music out there but, with technology, it also makes it a lot harder to be relative. There is a constant pressure to release something new,  like singles for examples, as opposed to full length albums. Plus, the ever-changing dilemma of how people listen to music is just another example. CD's are becoming obsolete so knowing your fan base, and knowing what works, becomes very important in your career.

What's one of your all-time favorite recordings?
I have always been a sucker for "Three More Days" by Ray LaMontagne. It's a simple song but the production is something that makes me smile to this day. The percussion keeps it grooving, the instrumentation was chosen extremely well, which blends well, and it brings the song together as a whole.

Name three people who have influenced your music, and tell us why-Living or dead.
Dave Matthews is someone who has influenced my musical career the most. I've always been intrigued by his sound as many found it hard to specifically put him in a genre. He created his own path in the industry and his fan base is loyal to this day. A "tightened jam band" if you would, was something that inspired me, as there is a sense of freedom to his music. You can see his show and the same song will be performed
differently each time.

Citizen Cope is a more recent influence again mainly because of his unique sound and overall vibe. Even though his music is not mainstream, his lyrical placement and groove is unique. He is someone who has influenced my musical career.

There are an endless amount of influences that range from blues/jazz artists, to even polka music, but another legend that comes to mind is Paul Simon. He has not only stayed relevant throughout his career, he has pushed the envelope of what a true "singer-songwriter" is. Plus, I am influenced by his constant development of production, sounds in song, and arrangements. He is someone who truly "creates" music.

Do you have any recent or upcoming projects you'd like to share with us? Tell us about it.
We are very proud of our recent self-titled release, Erick Macek EP which is a five-song collection of my most recent work. It's a mix of honesty, vulnerability and positivity. Take a listen, or purchase at www.erickmacek.com.

What is your ideal or target audience?
Preferably humans, haha. My audience is primarily late 20s/early 30s, but one of the greatest compliments as an artist is when you hear stories, or people come up to you and thank you, because a song I created helped them in a dire moment in their life, or they used my song for their first dance at a wedding. All these are moments that I cherish. Moving forward in my career I would ideally like to target a younger audience, ages 18-25. I know that this is a pivotal time for young adults filled with peer pressure, decisions, self-identity and love. Music has always been a universal language and a way to communicate without actually being there. I would like to speak to, and relate to, the future of our world.

Do you write/compose your own songs? Briefly describe your songwriting process.
I am an original artist. I create music that starts on a blank piece of paper and develops from there. I've written songs in a wide variety of ways, but one typical way I write songs is by simply creating and developing a melody or groove, often scatting over top in a freestyle manner. My scat eventually develops and turns into words, and I'll continuously write and rewrite the parts until I feel it has come to completion.

What do you like the most about Radio Airplay?
I like platforms that give the user the ability to meet, talk to and reach a new fan base.

Center Stage - Logan Tudeen

Get to know our latest Center Stage artist and Radio Airplay's Summer Song Contest winner, Logan Tudeen!

Bouncing onto the national scene straight from America’s Heartland, Logan Tudeen’s twist on modern country adds a light and jubilant delivery to the formats offerings on her debut self-titled project. Under the production wing of Kent Wells (Dolly Parton), Logan’s debut captures both her gleeful spirit and relatable lyrics. Logan was also selected by CMA Close Up Magazine as a 2013 "Who New To Watch".

What was the inspiration behind writing and recording the winning Summer Contest song "High Times?"
High Times was co-written with Kent Wells in Nashville. Kent also played guitar on my EP and produced it. When we sat down to write it, I wanted an up-beat, carefree tune that reflected good times. It was important that both guys and girls could relate to it. Everyone goes through the same experience in high school to a certain degree. We look at that time in our lives as living in the moment and not having a care in the world. I love that about the song. It is a "turn your stereo up loud" kind of song that is perfect in the summer!

What are some of your favorite summer activities? Any exciting plans this summer for you?
I'm a Florida girl at heart. I was born there and lived in Tampa for many years before moving to the Midwest. I LOVE the water. Boating, swimming,  and any outdoor activity is what I am all about! I would go barefoot all the time if I could! This summer I am visiting family in Florida and continuing to write music.

Describe your sound in one ramble-on sentence
My sound is young, edgy, bluesy, with a wide range and basically a whole lot of sunshine with a little bit of hurricane and surprisingly have been compared to Dolly Parton's voice.

What inspires you to make music?
My inspiration to make music is listening to other artists. I've always loved music and ALL genres, including pop, rap, country, and broadway. There is nothing more motivating than appreciating the work and artistry of others.

What aspect of making music excites you the most right now?
The aspect of making music that excites me the most right now is recording. It is one thing to write and sing a song, but recording is different. It is hard work. The studio musicians are stellar and bring life to a song. Stretching your voice and taking it places that you didn't think was possible is kinda cool.

What are the biggest challenges you face as a musician?
The biggest challenge that I face right now is getting my songs heard and played. It is always a struggle to get your music out there, especially to main stream radio stations, but it is nice to have online radio to help promote emerging artists like myself! I literally have fans from all over the world that have listened to my music and I really LOVE that!!

What's one of your all-time favorite recordings?
My all time favorite recording is Rascal Flatts "My wish". That band just makes the song seem effortless, and the vocals are great. There is nothing better than powerful lyrics and a fantastic voice to match.

Name three people who have influenced your music, and tell us why- Living or dead.
1) My parents: They have both encouraged me to pursue music because they know it makes me happy. They have supported me and will always be my biggest fans. When your parents believe in what you do, it makes it so much better.
2) Kent Wells, my producer, has had a  tremendous influence on me. He once told me that if I wanted to do this professionally, that I shouldn't have a "back-up plan". These words stuck with me.
3) My grandmother: My Nana has been singing to me since I've been born. She loves music and has a great voice. She is always encouraging and loves that I am following my dream.

Do you have any recent or upcoming projects you'd like to share with us? Tell us about it.
I plan on doing some more co-writes this fall and record a couple more singles. I really enjoy getting out there on radio tours, and would like to do that as well.

What is your ideal or target audience?
I don't have a particular target audience, but since I sing country-pop, most listeners prefer country music, however, people of all ages seem to be engaged which is so awesome.

Do you write/compose your own songs? Briefly describe your songwriting process.
I have co-written every song on my self-titled EP. I had the pleasure to write with some of Nashville's finest songwriters. I don't really consider myself a true song-writer but I am learning. It was important for me to be part of the writing process. Usually, I come with ideas and words and phrases that I have written down and the song writers expand on it. You learn so much from them. They are all brilliant at their craft. It is amazing how a song is brought to life. It is nice to have someone there with you when you are expressing your feelings. It is something that I want to continue to do.

What do you like the most about Radio Airplay?
Radio Airplay has really opened doors for me. It allows for my music to be heard to people from all over the country and beyond. I have fans that have downloaded my tracks and like what they hear. Internet radio is where music is headed and I'm glad to be part of it. Getting your music heard to potentially millions of listeners is what every musician strives for. It is the best music promotion out there!

Center Stage - Charles Wiley

Get to know our latest Center Stage artist, Charles Wiley.

Charles has been playing music for over 20 years, starting out playing with his father and brother as a child. He wrote his first piece of music before he even became a teenager and has written hundreds more since, always working on improving his craft. Some of his music has now been featured on television shows like Oprah and The Dr. Oz Show, and he continues to compose music for television and film.

Charles studied musical theory at Yavapai College in Prescott, Arizona, and later studied with drummer Gil Sharone, who is known for his work with Dillinger Escape Plan, OTEP, and Stolen Babies. More recently, Charles studied with legendary big band drummer Ed Shaughnessy, probably best known for his years as the drummer for The Tonight Show Band on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.

Charles has a wide range of influences and experiences in the music world. His background and greatest strengths are probably in rock and progressive rock.  Charles also enjoys composing his own solo pieces and working with other musicians and artists on creative projects, such as his wildly popular music video Amadeus. To Charles, the drum set is a musical instrument that he feels needs to be explored and tested further. "I'm not a drummer," he will tell you, "I am a musician who plays the drums."

Charles also spends a lot of time touring with other bands as well.  Check out his website to see tour dates and for more information:  http://www.charleswiley.net/

Describe your sound in one ramble-on sentence..
I try to take a unique blend of instruments, mix them together and hopefully create an enjoyable listening experience.

What inspires you to make music?
Sounds – whether the sounds are in my head or outside of it – they inspire me.

What aspect of making music excites you the most right now?
I am really excited that the music business is changing so rapidly;  since the industry is in a constant state of flux, it forces me to constantly be thinking of different ways to get my music out there and make a living playing and making music.  That’s exciting because I feel that now, more than ever, artists are in charge of their own path.

What are the biggest challenges you face as a musician?
That the music business is changing so rapidly; since it is constantly changing, it can definitely make it a little more challenging to map out the best course to reach a certain goal.  But that’s also the fun part!

What's one of your all-time favorite recordings?
Tony Williams – Believe It

Name three people who have influenced your music, and tell us why- Living or dead.
Miles Davis – not only was he an amazing musician but he wasn’t afraid to try new things with his music.  From album to album there was always something new and different.  The point was the doing, not the outcome.
Rush – they aren’t a person but they are a band that I am extremely influenced by.   I am influenced by them in the same ways as Miles; they keep evolving as musicians and as a band.  Every album is different and they aren’t afraid to take chances and try new things.
Beaker, my cat:  he’s not afraid to speak his mind no matter the time of day.

Do you have any recent or upcoming projects you'd like to share with us? Tell us about it.
Yes.  I have a new single out, it is called “Voices” and it can be heard here:
or

What is your ideal or target audience?
I am trying to reach people that enjoy instrumental music in the rock, jazz fusion, new age and prog realm.  If you’re a fan of Weather Report, Yanni or OSI my goal is the same; I want to engage an emotional response out of the listener.  My music is a little varied; my EP “Transmission Complete” is definitely new agey, while “Amadeus” and “Voices” are more in the rock realm.  That being said, I feel stylistically it all works together and fans of one will like the others.  At least that is my hope!

Do you write/compose your own songs? Briefly describe your songwriting process..
I do write and compose my own music; if I am working on my own music then I basically start by noodling on my keyboard until I come up with an idea that I think is interesting.  It’s usually sparked by the sound or patch I am playing in and then it just goes from there.
If I am co-writing then my process is a bit different; it may just start with bouncing ideas off of one another or we may start with one of our own ideas; and then just take it from there.

What do you like the most about Radio Airplay?
I love that Radio Airplay gives me the opportunity to connect and meet new fans of my music that I would not have had the chance to connect with.  Radio Airplay provides a great platform that is easy to use while making it fun and engaging.

Here’s the link to my first single “Amadeus”

I will also be doing a video for my new single “Voices” that should be out by August.
