Congrats to top 5's. Jango, If possible, I'd really like to understand how top 5's get picked? because I am seeing no statistical or evidentiary rhyme or reason for some selections.
No sour grapes; Just, I've always been the inquisitive type and want to make sure it's a level playing field.
Best,

Is the PopScore a level playing field? Kind of, in as much as it's a known quantity (of unknown quantities). But each week when another "winner" with 44 (or 22 or 88) fans is "ranked" among the PopScore Top 5, the question that comes to mind is: WTF?

The top 5 usually have no fans, no comments, poor music production, poor photography, and so on. I don't get it.

I second BobbyChic's comments as well as those of the subsequent anonymous poster. When a "winner" has just 44 fans (Bobby Cool) you really have to wonder how he got into the Top 5. Sure, sure I know there are those of you who will remind us once again that it's all about getting people to listen to our music and I agree wholeheartedly with this, but since Jango *does* have the Top 5, it would sure be nice for them to clarify how someone with so few fans can get a top PopScore.

hey gang, Jango Juggler here....

PopScore is measured on one weeks worth of plays. You could be in the Top 5 your first week on Airplay if you have a high ratio of Fans to plays for that previous week. This is why sometimes the artists in the Top 5 have a smaller amount of fans.

It's not about how many fans you have total, but how many you had in the last week compared to how many plays you had that week...

hope this clears it up

How about answering our questions instead of treating us like morons? We KNOW it's a weekly thing. What we can't wrap our heads around is winning a popularity contest with 6 votes. When winners have double-digit fan counts (like Mr Cool), it emphasizes how the PopScore compares simple averages and how doing so yields "unfair" results.

Like all a sudden Jango gonna talk straight about pop score. Good luck w/that.

WOW my POP SCORE is at 83 today! Tha's a B and I was only C student in college and actually got an F in elective Piano Class!! (smokin too much dope and not showing up for weeks at a time) Wish I knew what I did to get it there and what to do to keep it from it's ineveitable fall back into the 60's tomorrow morning.

Oh well just enjoy it for the day and pretend t really means something I guess. ha ha ha ha ha!!!!!

I know this is off toipic and I apologize but are
some of you getting replys from fans to remove them from your email list when emailing them all at once?
if so, help me by suggesting that Jango give us a feature to select certain fans to not receive emails as they request this?
Im thinking jango is working on this but not sure

Thanks,
Chris Williams

Thank You Juggler. It's an interesting formula. But I think I understand it a little better now.

I still don't get why we're not allowed to understand the popscore in its entirety. Contests & elections need transparency to give them legitimacy. Statistical analysis of any kind (a poll, survey, or index) is only as good as its math and scientific rigor. In competitions, those competing usually have an idea of who and what they're up against and how their performance will be evaluated and measured against others. PopScore is all of these -- contest, poll, index, competition. So where's the math? How is the contest won? Is it a fair game?

This question has been asked on this blog since Jango began PopScore and it never gets answered satisfactorily. If ya wanna know what I think, Popscore is a pretty stupid Jango ploy to make us "emerging" musicians think that Jango is helping our careers. First they were calling listeners "fans" who just visited our pages or liked one song. They wouldn't let us email fans effectively either (the spam factor still looms large and threatens to completely sour Jango) It wasn't until some people bitched incessantly on this forum (and they lost plenty of our "emerging" dollars) that Jango even lifted a finger to fix anything. Now some things have been done, but they barely do anything to justify the money we spend trying to get people to listen to and BUY our songs/merch/concert tickets.

Jango raises their rates and adds an automatic debiting function to our subscriptions WITHOUT ANY NOTIFICATION WHATSOEVER.

Of course Jango needs better communication features for emerging artists to connect with fans. Of course that would make what we pay Jango worthwhile and then some. But they won't do it because that means their corporate clients will have to compete with us for fan exposure and dollars (why do you think we can't post videos but Sony artists can?) and that's a big no-no. Your pokey $100 per month will never be taken as seriously as the $10,000 WEA spends on the Black-Eyed Peas or whatever overexposed hack they're pimping at the moment.

So pray for a high pop score and you may get 5,000 free plays that will net you nothing more than an ego stroke.

PS - I stopped paying for Jango months ago, I'll start paying again (and recommending, rather than warning against Jango when my musician friends who ask me how good it is) when they get their shit together.

know what ? jango popScore IS fair.
1. make good music and play the best track to your niche (ie select the best bands you can be related to)
2. be patient and read point 3
3. try to find the best fit. how much plays you spend, when do you spend plays
4. pray : people like your song, push your song, comment on your music, comment on your profile... pray because some might dislike your song and make you lose 20 points on your popscore a day...
5. just wait for the end, every sunday...

Anonymous said...

ps : I'm the anonymous just above...
just play your songs, get fans, talk to them, enjoy the one fan you get sometimes in order to improve what you do... don't care about the popscore, you're not going to become suddenly famous because you get it ;)

Anonymous said...

Fair? You don't even know what the PopScore IS! Think about it.

Unsolicited advice is seldom welcome, so I doubt you'll take mine. But seriously: no matter how nice you are, where do you get off telling other people what they should or shouldn't do? Or what they should or shouldn't care about? Are you really so wise?

(No, you're not: your 5 point plan is only a 2 point plan and none of them support your unqualified judgement that the PopScore IS fair. You do realize that saying something, even with emphasis, doesn't make it so.

TO THE ANONYMOUS COMMENT ABOVE,
WHY DO YOU ALWAYS CLAIM THAT EVERYONE ELSE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT?
I AGREE WITH HIS POINTS. I MADE A FEW OF THOSE POINTS SOME TIME AGO AND THEY WORK.
IM GETTING MORE FANS AND PLAYS BECAUSE OF IT.
I GET AN AVERAGE OF AN 84 POPSCORE EACH WEEK WHEN IM NOT PAYING FOR AIR PLAYS BECAUSE FANS ARE PLAYING MY MUSIC.

MY POINT IS THIS.
DON'T DOWN SOMEONE ELSE'S SUGGESTIONS THAT JUST MAY WORK. WELCOME THEM.

CHRIS WILLIAMS

P.S. WHY DO YOU HAVE TO BE ANONYMOUS?
JUST CURIOUS.

- where do you get off telling other people what they should or shouldn't do?
- WHY DO YOU HAVE TO BE ANONYMOUS?
JUST CURIOUS.

Because I average more than 90 each week, and got 100 once. It's only suggestions, it worked for me, I never meant I understood it all.

Anonymous said...

And the suggestions are great and a real contribution. What I take exception to is being told what I should should should do & think & feel. Chris, you're the biggest offender. Case in point, you took the time to write just to tell me tell me what I should (or shouldn't) do. Why you decided in your head that I was rejecting the good plain sense parts of the above post has nothing to do with me -- you are, as usual, putting words in my mouth (e.g., "WHY DO YOU ALWAYS CLAIM THAT EVERYONE ELSE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT?". I never made any such claim. Maybe you're confused, because I've often said that I don't understand what YOU'RE talking about).

You never answer questions or debate ideas...just retreat to your petty and remarkably stupid strategy for being right: changing the topic with the anonymity digs. I've answered that question thoroughly. Why don't you answer one? Any one. For the love of god, answer a question.....

At any rate, welcome back. I missed your clueless, emotional responses to things no one ever said, and especially the way you ride that CAPSLOCK key. I wish I had the courage to sign my name, website, maybe work in my impressive PopScores like you, but, as you know, I am a coward.

My apologies to anyone who read this. I'm really, really sorry.

chris williams said...

Wow!! Its you again! I knew it and that is why I posted that.
You know, As I always said, Im not telling anyone what to do. There's nothing for me to answer.
I was agreeing with ones post and simply asking again why you have to be anonymous.

If you were stating that i was being anonymous, im not and have not. I believe I put my web page and name on all of my posts. I was simply asking you that question again because your last answer just didnt jive.
I personally dont care but think its pointless
to post anonymously.
I knew it was you and wonder why it is that you have to be so retarded about things.
You lash out at people who aren't lasing out at you.

Again, I spoke my peace the last time.

What question are you talking about??
Apparently your questions my friend are for Jango and evidentally, you still cant seem to figure their answer to you out. Sorry about that.
so, Take your ridiculous comments towards me elsewhere.

For the record, again!, I never claimed that no one else knew what they were talking about.

You're an idoit, take it somewhere else.

PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!\

Sorry you have damn problem with me.

I DONT CARE!!!!!!!!!!!!

TO CHRIS WILLIAMS RE: FAN UNHAPPY W/MASS EMAIL

I had a "Fan" complain about the mass emails. I expalained I had asked JANGO to remove him, but there is currently no mechanism to do so.

His response was F YOU stop spamming me. I contacted JANGO and apparently they are working on a means to do that. Until then I guess I will just have to put up with this idiots bullshit every time I mass email.

This is for the hot-headed adolescents who have nothing better to do besides bicker to strangers and put their shortcomings on BLAST!
Whose line is it anyway? The points don't matter!
Quit yer belly achin" and go practice.

chris williams said...

I just send one message when they add as a fan thanking them and to add me and thats it. They know but it needs to be corrected to be able to do that.

Who is Chris Williams in the Average Joe "F You" email kerfuffle? Is he the "fan" or the "Joe?"
