Another week, another unexplained, unprovoked affront to Jango Airplay customers. 4 of 5 "top artists", as determined by the mysterious PopScore, are bands that have amassed so few fans and comments in their time on Jango that mathematically, they must either be among the most UNpopular bands on Jango, or the most UNheard. The numbers are unavoidable: if you're netting fewer than 100 fans a month and yet are popular enough to make the PopScore charts (to top it!), how many plays a month could your music have? 200? 300? Even if positives are weighted 10x more than negatives (which would be absurd), that means "Top Artists" are being heard by only 1000 listeners a month. Jango doesn't even sell a "monthly plan" for so few plays. Each time Jango and its flawed math reward bands for doing nothing, it penalizes those who buy the spins and want to be heard -- those who enjoy REAL popularity. Each week, Jango insults its customers -- how long can it last?

People already know these artists; they are familiar with their music, even though they are new to jango. Dig a little deeper into their official sites and other links, guys. You'll see that these guys are established artists in their own rights.

You don't have to spend dough but you still have to "work your jango." and think outside the box a little bit to do it. It takes more effort than you think.

We've been on here since January 2010 and we just made a pop score of 75, but we have 9 (and sometimes more songs.) We have just started pulling in over 400 fans a month for a total of about 2000 fans. It has taken us until now to get this far.

Jango is not the end all. It's only a small part of your music career.

FORGET THE POPSCORE. IT WILL COME AND GO.
THE SAME FOLKS COMPLAIN EVERY WEEK. WHY???
IT WONT MAKE YOUR POPSCORE BETTER.
IVE SAID THIS SO MANY TIMES. USE IT FOR WHAT ITS WORTH. IF YOU THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX LIKE A POST BEFORE ME MENTIONED, YOU'LL UNDERSTAND WHEN IT COME TO ROOST. LET ME GIVE YOU ONE HINT AND ONE IVE SAID BEFORE. GUYS, JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE A LISTED FAN, DOESN'T MEAN THEY ARE PUTTING YOU ON THEIR STATIONS. YOU NEED FOR THEM TO DO THIS. I REALIZED THIS. THEY DON'T REALIZE THIS. THEY ARTE NOT INSTRUCTED TO AND TO OUR DEFENSE, JANGO SHOULD ENCOURAGE THEM TO. THE WAY TO DO THIS? IS SIMPLE AND ITS WORKED FOR ME. FIRST OF ALL, THANK THEM FOR BEING A FAN. AFTER ALL, YOUR ARE APPRECIATIVE OF THIS OR YOU WOULDN'T BE ON HERE. IN THE SAME EMAIL, ASK THEM TO ADD YOU TO THEIR STATIONS AND GIVE THEM YOUR WEBSITES AND INFO. ITS HELPED ME AND PEOPLE HAVE ADDED AND IVE SEEN CD SALES ALREADY. NOW, LETS DO THE MATH. CD SALES IN ONE HAND OR A MEASLY POPSCORE IN THE OTHER. HMMM, ID BE ASKING THOSE ARTISTS WHAT THEY ARE DOING. EVERYBODY IS DOING SOMETHING DIFFERENT THAT WORKS FOR THEM. SPEND YOUR TIME WORKING ON YOU, NOT COMPLAINING ABOUT SOMETHING YOU CANNOT CONTROL OTHER THAN YOUR OWN SUCCESS.
GOOD LUCK TO YOU GUYS AND ADD ME AS A FRIEND TO MYSPACE. WOULD LOVE TO HAVE YOU AS A FRIEND

I'm not dissing the artists. Each week, a growing number of Jango artist use these comments as a forum to voice their concern, bafflement, and outrage regarding Jango Airplay practices and the PopScore in particular. Jango introduced the PopScore as a ranking system, and each week it is (supposedly) used to determine 5 artists who are featured as Jango Top Artists. Yet week after week, some or all of the "Top Artists" share the conspicuous traits of having VERY low numbers of fans, few and repeated comments and, as someone points out above, numbers that simply don't add up. This suggests at least that PopScore favors small data sets, and to some it suggests blatant Payola-style corruption. For months now, Jango has refused to answer even the simplest of questions (like what the formula is for the PopScore). By not answering their customers' questions, which continue to grow louder and louder, Jango's lack of transparency and keeping-artists-in-the-dark way of doing things invoke the specter of how the big labels used and abused artists. Jango sees itself as the answer to the problem that was the major label system, but it is beginning to sound like the same old song. All Jango has to do to correct this is to answer simple questions simply and treat its customers with the respect they deserve for being just that...paying customers.

I too like to add and remove songs as I go. I think it takes awhile to find the right mix of tunes that connect and pull in fans. Often the songs that I just "love" are not my most popular tunes with an audience. I started out with pop scores of 50-54 and have slowly gotten higher each and every week. But as I've said before; it's not the pop score that I'm most concerned about. It's the # of fans I pick up each week and the response of each new song I put up. I plan on using this info to push singles on college radio and which states to focus on. I will also say that sales on itunes have really increase since I joined Jango.
Thanks
Eric

So you're either WITH Jango or AGAINST Jango, huh? Why would you comment "Jango doesn't need to answer anything" unless you were either Jango's "pet" or just plain dumb? If Jango is going to survive, it has to satisfy its customers. If Jango doesn't make it, it won't be because of those who ask questions and expect answers, but it might be because those questions went unanswered.

You barge into a conversation that has nothing to do with you. Not to participate, not to be heard, but to shut it down and insult those of us you interrupted. You think you're teaching? You're just running your mouth. You remind me of another arrogant, condescending know-it-all who couldn't keep his punk mouth shut and dropped knowledge like this gem at 4:20 every day:

SPEND YOUR TIME WORKING ON YOU, NOT COMPLAINING ABOUT SOMETHING YOU CANNOT CONTROL OTHER THAN YOUR OWN SUCCESS.

Very anonymous, because I'm embarrassed to be wasting my time, wasting everyone else's time, and wasting more words ON YOU. Go away. Shoo!

What i think is that Immortal Outfit should get that artist of the week as far as Rap /Hip Hop GOs on jango. They are a force to be heard and when you hear there music you will agree. songs like N My World! man now thats a HIT SONG!!!!!!!!!these guy are at 115 fans this week and it aint over its still 1 more day lef. so to Chris W i dono... man........ check Immortal Outfit and you be the judge 4 months today! they have been on jango 11/19/09 3/19/10 1194 fans theres your real popscore! and i hope before you respond you check them out.

Wow!A lot of angry voices on this page! The frustrations are understandable, this is a tough racket no matter how you look at it.And an artist is so close and personal to their music and may come to feel "Why Not me?"The top 5 artists are to be congratulated,we all suffer the same blood sweat and tears.I would not even concern myself with that popscore crap,I certainly would not play up to it,the thing here is to find people who dig what you do and connect with them.A part of your whole plan.Jango is very open and upfront that this is pay for play and a great tool for emerging artists to be heard over a large network.PFP?I shall tell you this, every major artist is doing it in US broadcast radio HAS to do it.It is called "promotion" not payola.Every major market station that artist is in is costing them $750 a week for 40 spins. The day that promotion bill is NOT paid is they day that station drops you.A new day is dawning for the indies that heretofore never existed."Build your own dream and following."I would give that popscore thing not a grain of salt,if it goes good that would be nice.I would cater much more to your listeners, you paid to find them-embrace them and take them on your trip.

wrong! theres no anger from the I.O. camp.we r very happy with our stats our music does speak for itself. But if a person wants to express there opinion then let them. is it really hurting anyone? thats what this blog is for EXPRESSING YASELF!! thats what jango wants and ether it will make them better or make them worse we shall all see in time.

I see it like this. If you dont have the fan base then theres no room to talk bottom line. If you get 100+ fans a week then that means your music is hottt and you got it!so speak! But if you have been on jango 6 months or less and your fan base is 5oo or less plzzzzzzzzz where is your room to talk. Just becuzz we speak our feeling does not mean we cant cut it!! Its just one mans opinion and its his right to express it thats not whining. you cant throw stones if you dwellin in a glass house... I.O.

Thinking something's "the truth" doesn't make it so. Jango's refusal to acknowledge customers' concerns is exasperating enough without dummies like you telling us "the truth." You don't know me, yet you put words in my mouth & assign motives to my actions and then condemn me for those made-up words, motives, and actions. If you won't butt out of business that isn't yours, at least try your hand at answering the questions being discussed on this page. You might think you're sharing some profound insight, but I'm telling you straight-up: you're not. What you do is hit caps-lock and shout down the ideas and comments of others, denying their validity and even the right to express them. You insult us and call us names and to top it all off you presume to instruct us, telling us the "correct" way to think, feel and behave. You don't offer reasons or explanations to support your demands. You don't address any concerns, answer any questions, or bring anything to the table other than a poorly misguided self-righteousness... and your ignorance, which you wear on your sleeve:

SPEND YOUR TIME WORKING ON YOU, NOT COMPLAINING ABOUT SOMETHING YOU CANNOT CONTROL OTHER THAN YOUR OWN SUCCESS.

SELF RIGHTOUS?? FIRST OF ALL.
NONE OF MY COMMENTS EVER WERE THAT NOR WERE THEY EVER TALKING DOWN TO ANYONE OF THE SUCH.
YOU MY FRIEND ARE THE ONLY ONE ON HERE SAYING THIS. I HAVE MY RIGHT AS WELL AND THE TRUTH IS
JUST WHAT YOU KEEP QUOTING ME ON.

FIRST OF ALL, I DONT KNOW EVERYTHING BUT I WILL TELL YOU THIS. WHO GIVES A DAMN ABOUT THE POPSCORE. AS SO MANY ON HERE HAVE SAID AND NOT INCLUDING ME, ITS NOT ABOUT THAT TO WHY WE ARE ON HERE. IM SORRY YOU!!!!!!!!!!! HAVE SUCH A PROBLEM WITH THIS. I NEVER CHIMED IN TO START THINGS. YOU HAVE MY FRIEND.

SO, MY STATEMENT MUST BE TRUE OR YOU WOULDNT BE PASTING IT ALL THE TIME. LOL

SO, IM NOT INSTRUCTING ANYONE ON HERE WHAT SO EVER, IM MERELY SHARING WHAT IS WORKING FOR ME.

GUYS, I WILL TELL YOU ONE THING THAT HAS WORKED FOR ME TO GET THESE GUYS PLAYING ME ON THEIR STATIONS.

THANK THEM AND ASK THEM TO ADD YOU TO THEIR STATIONS. THEY WILL AND THEY HAVE FOR ME. DOING THIS HELPS. I JUST GOT DONE GOING BACK AND ASKING ABOUT 300 OF THE ALMOST 600 FANS IVE GOTTEN IN THE LAST 11 WEEKS OR LESS BEING ON HERE.

IM JUST MERELY SUGGESTING THAT JANGO IS A GREAT TOOL TO PROMOTE US AND IVE SPENT YEARS WORKING ON RADIO STATIONS PLAYING MY STUFF IN SO MANY BANDS IVE BEEN IN AND ITS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE.
ITS THIS SITE THAT IS PUTTING THEM IN CHECK GIVING US A CHECK FOR ONCE...

HINT GUYS, REGISTER AND CLEAR YOUR STUFF WITH BMI OR ASCAP.

SO, SORRY ONE HAS A PROBLEM WITH ME AND WHAT I HAVE TO SAY BUT HOPEFULLY YOU WILL GET OVER IT.
OH YEAH AND DISCLOSE WHO YOU ARE

PEACE!!!!!!!!!!!!

One other thing before im done responding because im busy promoting myself, Ive read comments of ones saying "jango bodyguards" "in bed with jango on the down low"

trust me my friends, in all of my comments on this, im not defending anyone what so ever.

JUST MAKING A POINT THAT THIS SITE IS A TOOL FOR YOU TO PROMOTE YOURSELF AND SELL CDS.
ITS GETTING BIGGER AND BETTER AND US AS ARTISTS
WILL GROW WITH IT AS WE GO ALONG.

BUT NO!! IM NOT DEFENDING ANYONE.

Hey chris it seems like you no alot about jango! so can you explain why my group got a popscore of 84 and we pulled in 158 fans this week. Fugativ Immortal Outfit..........

I haven't been bitching about the PopScore, I've been bitching about CAPSLOCK. But that was ages ago...Where've you been? I've since switched over to mocking him, mostly for his delightful inability to see the irony (and hypocrisy) of coming back again and again to complain about people complaining and to tell me to spend my time on myself.

And it keeps getting better, what with 2 new posters anonymously taking issue with my anonymity even though they know me so intimately they can speak for me and predict my future behavior (spot on, too!). That the THREE of you would concentrate such time and energy on me is truly flattering, especially as your feelings on the subject of where energies should be focused are well known. I worry, though, that since you're all tied up with ME, you're not working on YOU (and again, I know how you feel about that). I'd be happy to help pick up the slack -- thanks to you, I'm pretty carefree these days.

You're doing so much for me already, I hate to even mention one more little thing I'd really appreciate: please stop telling me what to do. And out of curiosity, think you could get me a job with Jango (hired goon or apologist so we can work together)?

This was fun.

AVERAGE JOE said...

TIP - POP SCORE STRATEGY TO AVOID!! Ok first of y to be clear, I am not really here for POP Score, mainly because I am never even close and my music is not that well received by the JNAGO listening poulation as a whole.

I just like the ego strokes from the 2-3% who end up on the fan list and the .2% who have something nice to say about my music.

Hoiwever just to entertain my self I thought I would try some ideas to see if I could manipulate the POP SCORE.

WARNING !!! DON"T TRY THIS AT HOME!!! So here is my bright idea...I went to the Reports FAN OVERLAP report, selected the song I was going to allocate plays to, printed out the Overlap Report and edited my TArget Ageted Artists to ONLY THOSE on the Overlap Report for that song.
So far so good. I allocated a bunch of plays and went to bed.

The Result: By targeting only the Artists on the OVERLAP for The Specific Song my I did SUCCESSFULLY MANIPULATE my POP SCORE!! It went from afabulous 47 DOWN to 19!!

Also my Fan/Likes percentage dropped from around 4% to .7% for this experiment. So I have no idea how the Fan Overlap Report really corresponds to listeners who ACTUALLY LIKE the music but I went back to selecting targeted Artists by gut feeling hoping to get the FAN/LIKES count back up to 4% and my POP SCORE back up to it's normal 44-55 range. lol

All for fun!!

Anyway that's my story and I'm stickin' to it!! Rock ON!!

Anonymous said...

Thanks for sharing, AVG JOE! In the absence of instruction from Jango, and with only the dodgy Play Stat data*, every little bit helps.

*are fans and likes separate? are fans included in likes? dashboard says likes are included in fan list... Whenever Jango begins, "to clarify..." or, "in the spirit of utter transparency..." my brain locks up.

Jango PopScore

What is it?

The PopScore is a weekly contest, and the winners are promoted in Jango's newsletters, press releases, artist interviews, and receive bonus plays and other perks as well. The PopScore chart-toppers are featured in Skope Magazine and "top bands will be selected for Sync Licensing Opportunities."

According to Jango, the PopScore is their "way of rewarding the artists who resonate most with the 7 Million listeners on Jango.com."

What's the Prob?

The PopScore is either deeply flawed or it is a sham. This week's winners average 27 fans per week and only 2 have been on Jango for more than a month. I used my own PopScores and Play Stats to determine the fan-to-play ratio needed to produce a PopScore of 90. The results: paid plays must net a return of 6.1% fans (or 9.2% "likes") for a PopScore of 90. For a score of 80 the numbers are 4.3% fans (7.4% "likes"). Since the PopScore is relative, we can extrapolate very unscientifically that to achieve a perfect PopScore, 7.9% of paid plays need to return a fan (11% "likes").

Let me be the first to say: These numbers are meaningless. Jango, for some reason, refuses to explain the PopScore's formula. Who knows how many variables it contains and how they are weighted? Applying sloppy formulas derived from a 27 fan-per-day data set to a 27 fan-per-week dataset would be pointless; the results wouldn't tell you anything that wasn't painfully obvious without all the math. Which is my point exactly.

I don't think it takes more than a casual look at Jango's PopScore to notice it's broken, and that Jango is broken. Price hikes, unfulfilled promises, features that fail to impress (if they're working at all), and hands-down the worst communication skills imaginable made Jango a love-'em-or-leave-'em proposition for me. It was great for a while, but I it's hard to love what you can't respect. And my respect for Jango plunges each time the PopScore disses the deserving and declares an artist with less than 300 spins to be the "resonating" darling of 7 million listeners.

UPDATE: Jango has yet to publicly publish this week's PopScore Top 5 (I received it with the usual notice about my own PopScore). Maybe Jango will address this problem. I hope so -- I don't want to leave!

AVERAGE JOE said...

Don't forget there are literally THOUSANDS of "Emerging Artists" (or in some cases "Submerging and Drowning Artists", yours truly a case in point) posting on JANGO.

Certainly not the Hundreds I thought were probably on here. Call me naive!! That is a LOT of BANDS for Jango to manage and a lot of competition for FANS, play tinme etc. It made me feel so insignificant when I found that out!! :)

Anyhow the numbers referenced above seem pretty accurate, i.e. about 8% fan response with low thumbs down numbers = 80+ qualifying POP Score.

There was a TOP POP or POP TOP if you like, who was a TOP POP POP TOP 5 with just 8 Fans!! Here is how that IS Possible:if that was achieved with just 50 paid plays, the minimum required, that is a 16% FAN/PLAY ratio.

If so they are doing a hell of a job of targeting listeners that LOVE the sound they are posting. Seems like that is the KEY to mysterious POP TOP 5. High RATIO of FANS/HATERS vs. the High Ratio of HATERS/FANS for us low POP TOP Scorers!! Kudos to them!!

As to how the NEW FAN counts vary from the LIKES count I believe it is because folks who are already fans can take actions that result in a LIKE, such as a SMILEY FACE on a different song or adding you to a station when they already are a fan. (IS THAT ACCURATE JANGO) They will only be counted as a NEW FAN once but they may take positive actions i.e. LIKES multiple times. (?) Makes sense to me.

Personally I like to think it is FANS I emailed asking to check out a new song, who did so and took a positive action when they listened. For example I sent a ton of emails when I posted a new song last week and for several days the Profile Views and LIKES had a visible jump. NEW FANS stayed at about it's normal level which is nothing I really want to talk about here. I do have my pride!!

Ok ... that's all...oh if you haven't checked out my latest posting ROUND & ROUND, vist my profile, give it a listen and then be really nice and click on the smiley face!!

My hope is some wealthy producer will stumble across my music while tripping on acid and decide (influenced heavily by the acid)that it is a unique sound worth investing lots of money in!! (Translation: I plan to be poor forever!!)
